Active filtering of electric power has now become a mature technology for harmonic and reactive power compensation in two-wire (single phase), three-wire (three phase without neutral), and four-wire (three phase with neutral) AC power networks with nonlinear loads. This paper presents a comprehensive review of active filter (AF) configurations, control strategies, selection of components, other related economic and technical considerations, and their selection for specific applications. It is aimed at providing a broad perspective on the status of AF technology to researchers and application engineers dealing with power quality issues. A list of more than 200 research publications on the subject is also appended for a quick reference.

A review of active filters for power quality improvement

Solid-state switch-mode rectification converters have reached a matured level for improving power quality in terms of power-factor correction (PFC), reduced total harmonic distortion at input AC mains and precisely regulated DC output in buck, boost, buck-boost and multilevel modes with unidirectional and bidirectional power flow. This paper deals with a comprehensive review of improved power quality converters (IPQCs) configurations, control approaches, design features, selection of components, other related considerations, and their suitability and selection for specific applications. It is targeted to provide a wide spectrum on the status of IPQC technology to researchers, designers and application engineers working on switched-mode AC-DC converters. A classified list of more than 450 research publications on the state of art of IPQC is also given for a quick reference.

A review of single-phase improved power quality AC-DC converters

This paper presents a comprehensive review on the unified power quality conditioner (UPQC) to enhance the electric power quality at distribution levels. This is intended to present a broad overview on the different possible UPQC system configurations for single-phase (two-wire) and three-phase (three-wire and four-wire) networks, different compensation approaches, and recent developments in the field. It is noticed that several researchers have used different names for the UPQC based on the unique function, task, application, or topology under consideration. Therefore, an acronymic list is developed and presented to highlight the distinguishing feature offered by a particular UPQC. In all 12 acronyms are listed, namely, UPQC-D, UPQC-DG, UPQC-I, UPQC-L, UPQC-MC, UPQC-MD, UPQC-ML, UPQC-P, UPQC-Q, UPQC-R, UPQC-S, and UPQC-VA. More than 150 papers on the topic are rigorously studied and meticulously classified to form these acronyms and are discussed in the paper.

Enhancing Electric Power Quality Using UPQC: A Comprehensive Overview

With the number of electric vehicles (EVs) on the rise, there is a need for an adequate charging infrastructure to serve these vehicles. The emerging extreme fast-charging (XFC) technology has the potential to provide a refueling experience similar to that of gasoline vehicles. In this article, we review the state-of-the-art EV charging infrastructure and focus on the XFC technology, which will be necessary to support the current and future EV refueling needs. We present the design considerations of the XFC stations and review the typical power electronics converter topologies suitable to deliver XFC. We consider the benefits of using the solid-state transformers (SSTs) in the XFC stations to replace the conventional line-frequency transformers and further provide a comprehensive review of the medium-voltage SST designs for the XFC application.

Extreme Fast Charging of Electric Vehicles: A Technology Overview

In this paper, an interleaved active-power-filter concept with reduced size of passive components is discussed. The topology is composed of two pulsewidth-modulation interleaved voltage-source inverters connected together on the ac line and sharing the same dc-link capacitor. The advantages of the proposed approach are as follows: 1. significant reduction in the linkage inductors' size by decreasing the line-current ripple due to the interleaving; 2. reduction of the switching stress in the dc-link capacitor, due to the shared connection; and 3. more accurate compensation for high-power applications, because the power sharing allows one to use a higher switching frequency in each inverter. This paper analyzes the design of the passive components and gives a practical and low-cost solution for the minimization of the circulation currents between the inverters, by using common-mode coils. Several simulation results are discussed, and experimental results with a three-phase 10-kVA 400-V unit are obtained to validate the theoretical analysis.

Shunt Active-Power-Filter Topology Based on Parallel Interleaved Inverters

A novel zero-voltage and zero-current-switching (ZVZCS) full-bridge pulsewidth modulation converter is presented to simplify the circuits of the previously presented ZVSCS converters. A simple auxiliary circuit, which consists of one small capacitor and two small diodes, is added in the secondary to provide ZVZCS conditions to primary switches, as well as to clamp secondary rectifier voltage. The additional clamp circuit for the secondary rectifier is not necessary. The auxiliary circuit includes neither lossy components nor additional active switches, which makes the proposed converter efficient and cost effective. The principle of operation, features, and design considerations are illustrated and verified on a 2.5 kW 100 kHz insulated-gate-bipolar-transistor-based experimental circuit.

Novel zero-voltage and zero-current-switching full-bridge PWM converter using a simple auxiliary circuit

This paper describes a newly developed novel repetitive impulse voltage generator using a boost converter array. To solve problems such as short life time, low operating frequency, and the fixed pulse width of conventional generators, the proposed generator is designed with a boost converter array that employs series-connected capacitors and insulated gate bipolar transistors. The circuit can easily obtain a high-voltage pulse without any high-voltage direct current source and pulse transformer. Thus, the proposed circuit not only allows elimination of the expensive high-frequency transformer but also allows operation at a frequency up to several kilohertz with high reliability and longer life span. To validate the proposed circuit, two pulse generators rated at 1.8 kV, 40 A and 20 kV, 300 A are implemented and tested.

Pulsed power supplies using solid state switches have been widely studied recently. Use of high power semiconductors such as IGBTs and IGCTs have become an area of interest today. To make this, several type of pulse generators using solid state devices have been adopted and tested in many papers. In this paper, a boost converter array using series-connected switches is presented. The electrical circuit is made of a boost converter array to produce high voltage pulses. To verify the proposed converter, an experimental equipment with a 20 kV, 300 A pulse generator was made and food treatment results are shown.

Solid state Marx generator using series-connected IGBTs

High voltage pulsed power supply using IGBT (insulated gate bipolar transistor) stacks and pulse transformer for plasma source ion implantation is proposed. To increase voltage rating, twelve IGBTs are used in series at each IGBT stack and a step-up pulse transformer is utilized. To increase the current rating, the proposed system makes use of synchronized three pulse generator modules composed of diodes, capacitors and IGBT stacks. The proposed pulsed power supply uses semiconductor switches as main switches. Hence, the system is compact, and has semi-infinite lifetime. In addition, it has high flexibility in parameters such as voltage magnitude (10-60 kV), pulse repetition rate (PRR) (10-2000 pps), and pulse width (2-5 muS).
