Recent progress and outlook for the ECMWF Integrated Forecasting System
TL;DR: ECMWF Cycle 47r2 was first introduced on 11 May 2021 and its key features included changing the vertical resolution of the Ensemble forecast system (ENS) from 91 to 137 levels, the same used in the HRES as mentioned in this paper .
An Urban Scheme for the ECMWF Integrated Forecasting System: Global Forecasts and Residential CO2 Emissions
Joe McNorton,Anna Agusti-Panareda,Gabriele Arduini,Gianpaolo Balsamo,Nicolas Bousserez,Souhail Boussetta,M. Chericoni,Margarita Choulga,Richard Engelen,Marc Guevara +9 more
TL;DR: In this paper , a simple single-layer urban canopy scheme was used within a global forecast model to jointly improve predictions of near-surface weather variables and residential CO2 emissions, which was implemented in the Integrated Forecast System used operationally at the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts running at ∼9 km horizontal resolution.

Improving the temporal and spatial vegetation variability in land surface models based on satellite observations
Gianpaolo Balsamo,Markus Hrachowitz,Franco Catalano,Souhail Boussetta,Fransje van Oorschot,Ruud van der Ent,Arturo Blazquez-Navarro +6 more
TL;DR: In this article , the effects of integrating spatially and temporally varying vegetation characteristics derived from satellite observations on modelled evaporation and soil moisture in the land surface model HTESSEL were evaluated.

Effects of the realistic vegetation cover on the large-scale circulation at seasonal and decadal time scales.
Gianpaolo Balsamo,Susanna Corti,Souhail Boussetta,Annalisa Cherchi,Fransje van Oorschot,Arturo Blazquez-Navarro +5 more
TL;DR: In this paper , the authors investigated the effects of improved representation of vegetation dynamics on climate predictions at different timescales: seasonal and decadal, and found that a significant improvement in the skill for DJF T2M was found, especially over Euro-Asian Boreal forests.

Towards a Digital Twin of the Earth: ECMWF's effort to build a Kilometre-scale Earth System Model
TL;DR: In this article , the authors presented an overview of the work undertaken at ECMWF, in the Destination Earth initiative of the European Comission, to build the global continuous component of the Weather-induced and Geophysical Extremes Digital Twin (Extremes DT) of the Earth.
