Stochastic representations of model uncertainties at ECMWF: state of the art and future vision
Martin Leutbecher,Sarah-Jane Lock,Pirkka Ollinaho,Simon T. K. Lang,Gianpaolo Balsamo,Peter Bechtold,Massimo Bonavita,Hannah M. Christensen,Michail Diamantakis,Emanuel Dutra,Stephen English,Michael Fisher,Richard G. Forbes,Jacqueline Goddard,Thomas Haiden,Robin J. Hogan,Stephan Juricke,Heather Lawrence,Dave MacLeod,Linus Magnusson,Sylvie Malardel,Sebastien Massart,Irina Sandu,Piotr K. Smolarkiewicz,Aneesh C. Subramanian,Frederic Vitart,Nils Wedi,Antje Weisheimer,Antje Weisheimer +28 more
TL;DR: Recent progress, challenges and future directions regarding stochastic representations of model uncertainties at ECMWF are described in this paper.
Journal ArticleDOI
Why is it so difficult to represent stably stratified conditions in numerical weather prediction (NWP) models
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors investigated the relationship between the turbulence closure in stable conditions and the large-scale flow and found that reduced turbulent diffusion improves the representation of winds in stable boundary layers, but it deteriorates the large scale flow and the near-surface temperatures.
Journal ArticleDOI
Toward a Consistent Reanalysis of the Climate System
Dick Dee,Magdalena Balmaseda,Gianpaolo Balsamo,Richard Engelen,Adrian Simmons,Jean-Noël Thépaut +5 more
TL;DR: The authors reviewed past and current reanalysis activities at the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) and described plans for developing future reanalyses of the coupled climate system.
Journal ArticleDOI
The AMMA Land Surface Model Intercomparison Project (ALMIP)
Aaron Boone,Patricia de Rosnay,Gianpaolo Balsamo,Anton Beljaars,Franck Chopin,Bertrand Decharme,Christine Delire,Agnès Ducharne,Simon Gascoin,Manuela Grippa,Françoise Guichard,Yeugeniy M. Gusev,Phil Harris,Lionel Jarlan,Laurent Kergoat,Eric Mougin,Olga N. Nasonova,Anette Norgaard,Tristan Orgeval,Catherine Ottlé,Isabelle Poccard-Leclercq,Jan Polcher,Inge Sandholt,S. Saux-Picart,Christopher M. Taylor,Yongkang Xue +25 more
TL;DR: In this article, a multiscale modeling approach using an ensemble of land surface models that rely on dedicated satellite-based forcing and land surface parameter products, and data from the African Multidisciplinary Monsoon Analysis (AMMA) observational field campaigns is presented.
Journal ArticleDOI
Initialisation of Land Surface Variables for Numerical Weather Prediction
TL;DR: In this article, a review of different approaches used in numerical weather prediction to initialise land surface variables is presented, which discusses the observation availability and quality, and it addresses the combined use of conventional observations and satellite data.
