TL;DR: Carotenoids are isoprenoids widely distributed in foods that have been always part of the diet of humans as mentioned in this paper, and they are also attracting interest in the context of nutricosmetics, as they have been shown to provide cosmetic benefits when ingested in appropriate amounts.
Journal ArticleDOI
Carotenoids: Considerations for Their Use in Functional Foods, Nutraceuticals, Nutricosmetics, Supplements, Botanicals, and Novel Foods in the Context of Sustainability, Circular Economy, and Climate Change.

TL;DR: Carotenoids are versatile isoprenoids that are important in food quality and health promotion and there is a need to establish recommended dietary intakes/nutritional reference values for carotenoid.
Journal ArticleDOI
European Database of Carotenoid Levels in Foods. Factors Affecting Carotenoid Content.
M. Graça Dias,Grethe Iren A Borge,Kristina Kljak,Anamarija Mandić,Paula Mapelli-Brahm,Begoña Olmedilla-Alonso,Adela Pintea,Francisco Ravasco,Vesna Tumbas Šaponjac,Jolanta Sereikaitė,Liliana Vargas-Murga,Jelena Vulić,Antonio J. Meléndez-Martínez +12 more
TL;DR: The results show the importance of food characterization to ensure its intercomparability, as large variations in carotenoid levels are observed between species and among varieties/cultivars/landraces and highlights the significance of integrating nutritional criteria into agricultural choices and of promoting biodiversity.
