Developing high-performance dielectric capacitors is essential to meet the growing demands of hybrid electric vehicles and high-power applications. The energy storage efficiency and the temperature-variant energy storage properties should be considered besides the energy density. In this work, we prepared (1 − x)(0.8NaNbO3–0.2SrTiO3) − xBi(Zn0.5Sn0.5)O3 (abbreviated as (1 − x)(NN–ST) − xBZS) lead-free ceramics, where ion disorder is induced in the A–B sites. The experimental results indicate that the antiferroelectric orthorhombic R phase is stabilized, and the breakdown strength is enhanced due to the decreased grain size after BZS modification, which are conducive to optimizing the energy storage performance. The piezoresponse force microscopy (PFM) observation reveals that the incorporated BZS promotes the reversibility of domains, resulting in enhanced energy storage efficiency. Therefore, an energy density of 5.82 J cm−3 and an efficiency of 92.3% are simultaneously obtained in the 0.96(NN–ST) − 0.04BZS composition, and the obtained efficiency in this work reaches a record high in NN-based energy storage ceramics. Especially, the sample displays extraordinary temperature stability, that is, high energy storage density (3.6–4.31 J cm−3) and efficiency (90–95%) are achieved in a wide temperature range from −60 °C to 180 °C. Our work would provide a powerful strategy for designing high-performance energy storage capacitors operating in harsh environments.

Enhanced energy storage performance of eco-friendly BNT-based relaxor ferroelectric ceramics via polarization mismatch-reestablishment and viscous polymer process

Although relaxor ferroelectrics have been widely investigated owing to their various advantages, there are still impediments to boosting their energy-storage density (Wrec) and energy-storage efficiency (η). In this paper, we propose a cooperative optimization strategy for achieving comprehensive outstanding energy-storage performance in (Na0.5Bi0.5)0.7Sr0.3TiO3 (NBST)-based ceramics by triggering a nonergodic-to-ergodic transformation and optimizing the forming process. The first step of substituting NaNbO3 (NN) for NBST generated an ergodic state and induced polar nanoregions under the guidance of a phase-field simulation. The second step was to apply a viscous polymer process (VPP) to the 0.85NBST-0.15NN ceramics, which reduced porosity and increased compactness, resulting in a significant polarization difference and high breakdown strength. Consequently, 0.85NBST-0.15NN-VPP ceramics optimized by this cooperative two-step strategy possessed improved energy-storage characteristics (Wrec = 7.6 J/cm3, η = 90%) under 410 kV/cm as well as reliable temperature adaptability within a range of 20-120 °C, outperforming most reported (Na0.5Bi0.5) TiO3-based ceramics. The improved energy-storage performance validates the developed ceramics' practical applicability as well as the advantages of implementing a cooperative optimization technique to fabricate similar high-performance dielectric ceramics.

Enhanced Energy Storage Properties in Lead-Free (Na0.5Bi0.5)0.7Sr0.3TiO3-Based Relaxor Ferroelectric Ceramics through a Cooperative Optimization Strategy.

High energy density, temperature stable lead-free ceramics by introducing high entropy perovskite oxide

Pyroptosis, a kind of programmed cell death involving inflammation, might be a powerful way to fight against tumors, for example, using immunotherapy. However, how to trigger pyroptosis in cancer cells is an important issue. Photothermal (PTT)/photodynamic (PDT) therapy is a crucial strategy for inducing cancer cell pyroptosis with noninvasiveness. In this work, a sericin derivative modified with poly(γ-benzyl-l-glutamate) (PBLG) could self-assemble and was stable in an aqueous environment. Furthermore, the sericin derivative was conjugated with the tumor-targeting agent VB12 and loaded with IR780. Finally, we successfully synthesized VB12-sericin-PBLG-IR780 nanomicelles. The as-designed nanomicelles showed appropriate particle sizes, spherical morphology, improved photothermal stability, and high photothermal conversion efficiency (∼40%), which generated reactive oxygen species (ROS) simultaneously. Through enhanced cellular uptake, VB12-sericin-PBLG-IR780 could deliver more IR780 into cancer cells. With near-infrared (NIR), the VB12-sericin-PBLG-IR780 could significantly inhibit the expression of ATP synthase, called ATP5MC3, followed by mitochondrial damage. The presence of mitochondrial reactive oxygen species (mitoROS) led to oxidative damage of mitochondrial DNA (mitoDNA), which further activates NLRP3/Caspase-1/gasdermin D (GSDMD)-dependent pyroptosis and could promote dendritic cell (DC) maturation by pyroptosis. Furthermore, our data showed that VB12-sericin-PBLG-IR780 could achieve a brilliant antitumor effect and could activate DC maturation, initiate T-cell recruiting, and prime adaptive antitumor efficiency. Overall, our well-prepared nanomicelles might offer a tumor-targeted approach for programmed cell pyroptosis and inducing antitumor immunity via photothermal PTT/PDT effect-induced mitoDNA oxidative damage.

VB12-Sericin-PBLG-IR780 Nanomicelles for Programming Cell Pyroptosis via Photothermal (PTT)/Photodynamic (PDT) Effect-Induced Mitochondrial DNA (mitoDNA) Oxidative Damage.

Accurate identification and visualization of peritoneal metastases (PM) are clinically essential to improving the prognosis for gastric cancer. However, owing to the multifocal spread of peritoneal metastasis nodules, small size, and close contact with adjacent organs, identifying and completely removing them during surgery is extremely challenging, resulting in cancer treatment failure and recurrence. This study develops a T1‐weighted magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) contrast agent (FeGdNP)‐loaded indocyanine green/glucose oxidase (ICG/GOx) with conjugation of an RGD dimer (RGD2) and acid‐labile polymer mPEG (FeGdNP‐ICG/GOx‐RGD2‐mPEG). Compared with commercial Magnevist, the proposed FeGdNP‐ICG/GOx‐RGD2‐mPEG shows a two to three‐fold higher tumor ΔSNR in MRI of peritoneal metastasis and subcutaneous animal models. Compared with free ICG, the increased fluorescent signal of FeGdNP‐ICG/GOx‐RGD2‐mPEG allows for the detection of tiny tumor metastatic nodules (<3 mm), and the removal of the peritoneum transplanted tumors. Abundant gluconic acid and H2O2 are generated during the GOx‐mediated glucose depletion process in cancer cells, thereby enhancing Fenton reaction efficiency. Accumulated toxic ·OH can damage the mitochondrial function and induce the release of mitochondrial reactive oxygen species, which activates the ferroptosis pathway. The data indicate the potential of the nanoparticles for MRI preoperative diagnosis, intraoperative fluorescence‐guided navigation, and ferroptosis tumor therapy.

Targeted Magnetic Resonance Imaging/Near‐Infrared Dual‐Modal Imaging and Ferroptosis/Starvation Therapy of Gastric Cancer with Peritoneal Metastasis

Innate immunity triggered by the cGAS/STING pathway has the potential to improve cancer immunotherapy. Previously, the authors reported that double-stranded DNA (dsDNA) released by dying tumor cells can trigger the cGAS/STING pathway. However, owing to efferocytosis, dying tumor cells are engulfed and cleared before the damaged dsDNA is released; hence, immunologic tolerance and immune escape occur. Herein, a cancer-cell-membrane biomimetic nanocomposites that exhibit tumor-immunotherapeutic effects are synthesized by augmenting the cGAS/STING pathway and suppressing efferocytosis. Once internalized by cancer cells, a combined chemo/chemodynamic therapy would be triggered, which damages their nuclear and mitochondrial DNA. Furthermore, the releasing Annexin A5 protein could inhibit efferocytosis effect and promote immunostimulatory secondary necrosis by preventing phosphatidylserine exposure, resulting in the burst release of dsDNA. These dsDNA fragments, as molecular patterns to immunogenic damage, escape from the cancer cells, activate the cGAS/STING pathway, enhance cross-presentation inside dendritic cells, and promote M1-polarization of tumor-associated macrophages. In vivo experiments suggest that the proposed nanocomposite could recruit cytotoxic T-cells and facilitate long-term immunological memory. Moreover, when combined with immune-checkpoint blockades, it could augment the immune response. Therefore, this novel biomimetic nanocomposite is a promising strategy for generating adaptive antitumor immune responses.
