This book by a teacher of statistics (as well as a consultant for \"experimenters\") is a comprehensive study of the philosophical background for the statistical design of experiment. It is necessary to have some facility with algebraic notation and manipulation to be able to use the volume intelligently. The problems are presented from the theoretical point of view, without such practical examples as would be helpful for those not acquainted with mathematics. The mathematical justification for the techniques is given. As a somewhat advanced treatment of the design and analysis of experiments, this volume will be interesting and helpful for many who approach statistics theoretically as well as practically. With emphasis on the \"why,\" and with description given broadly, the author relates the subject matter to the general theory of statistics and to the general problem of experimental inference. A fast-Fourier-transform method of topography and interferometry is proposed. By computer processing of a noncontour type of fringe pattern, automatic discrimination is achieved between elevation and depression of the object or wave-front form, which has not been possible by the fringe-contour-generation techniques. The method has advantages over moire topography and conventional fringe-contour interferometry in both accuracy and sensitivity. Unlike fringe-scanning techniques, the method is easy to apply because it uses no moving components.

Fourier-transform method of fringe-pattern analysis for computer-based topography and interferometry

TiO(2) is one of the most studied compounds in materials science. Owing to some outstanding properties it is used for instance in photocatalysis, dye-sensitized solar cells, and biomedical devices. In 1999, first reports showed the feasibility to grow highly ordered arrays of TiO(2) nanotubes by a simple but optimized electrochemical anodization of a titanium metal sheet. This finding stimulated intense research activities that focused on growth, modification, properties, and applications of these one-dimensional nanostructures. This review attempts to cover all these aspects, including underlying principles and key functional features of TiO(2), in a comprehensive way and also indicates potential future directions of the field.

In the present study on the self-incompatibility in inbred lines of ten local Indian cultivars (Pusa Chetki, Chetki Long, Aushi, Alipur Local White, Jaunpuri, Half Red, Scarlet Red, Chinese Pink, Desi Red and Khasi Kata) of radish ( Raphanus sativus L.), Pusa Chetki, Chetki Long, Aushi, Alipur Local White and Jaunpuri were classed as selfcompatible, Half Red, Scarlet Red and Chinese Pink as intermediate and Desi Red and Khasi Kata as self-incompatible. The highest number of germinated pollen grains and pollen tubes was observed in Pusa Chetki, followed by Alipur Local White, Jaunpuri, Aushi and Chetki Long. The discrepancy in the number of germinated pollen grains in the stigmas may be explained by the inhibitory action of large numbers of self-incompatible pollen grains on the stigma. When two lines, Desi Red and Khasi Kata, were grown under different temperature and photoperiod conditions, no breakdown in self-incompatibility was observed, and the flowering periods of these lines are naturally well sync...

Studies on self-incompatibility in local Indian cultivars of radish (Raphanus sativus L.)

Molecular characterization of soybean yellow mosaic virus isolates and identification of stable resistance sources in central India

Objective: Ventilator requirement is an important constituent of post-operative care of patients of esophageal atresia (EA). In contrast to the developed world, the situation is very different in developing countries where the resources are limited, and ventilator may not be available to all patients of EA. This study was conducted to assess whether there are certain criteria, which may predict the possibility of non- requirement of ventilator for patients of EA in the post-operative period. Design: This study was a retrospective observational study. Setting: This study was conducted at a tertiary care teaching hospital. Duration: This study was conducted from 5 years and 6 months. Materials and Methods: We used certain parameters to assess the requirement of ventilators for the patients in the post-operative period. These included the presentation of patients before or after 3 days of life and birth weight (BW) of more or <2.5 kg. Presence of respiratory distress (RD) was analyzed. The presence of consolidation on X-ray was also evaluated. Results: The total number of patients was 175. In univariate analysis, the need of ventilator was significantly higher in patients presenting after 3 days of life, weight <2.5 kg, presence of RD, and pneumatic patch. In multivariate analysis, the age of presentation, weight, RD, and consolidation were found to independent factor for the ventilator requirement. Conclusion: On the basis of clinical and radiological features, namely, age, sex, BW, RD, and consolidation, we may prioritize these patients of EA, who may not be requiring the ventilator in the post-operative period. Further prospective studies on the basis of these factors may substantiate our efforts.
