Metal-based electrocatalysts with different sizes (single atoms, nanoclusters, and nanoparticles) show different catalytic behaviors for various electrocatalytic reactions. Regulating the coordination environment of active sites with precision to rationally design an efficient electrocatalyst is of great significance for boosting electrocatalytic reactions. This review summarizes the recent process of heterogeneous supported single atoms, nanoclusters, and nanoparticles catalysts in electrocatalytic reactions, respectively, and figures out the construct strategies and design concepts based on their strengths and weaknesses. Specifically, four key factors for enhancing electrocatalytic performance, including electronic structure, coordination environment, support property, and interfacial interactions are proposed to provide an overall comprehension to readers in this field. Finally, some insights into the current challenges and future opportunities of the heterogeneous supported electrocatalysts are provided.

Design concept for electrocatalysts

Product selectivity in multielectron electrocatalytic reactions is crucial to energy conversion efficiency and chemical production. However, a present practical drawback is the limited understanding of actual catalytic active sites. Here, using as a prototype single-atom catalysts (SACs) in acidic oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), we report the structure-property relationship of catalysts and show for the first time that molecular-level local structure, including first and second coordination spheres (CSs), rather than individual active atoms, synergistically determines the electrocatalytic response. ORR selectivity on Co-SACs can be tailored from a four-electron to a two-electron pathway by modifying first (N or/and O coordination) and second (C-O-C groups) CSs. Using combined theoretical predictions and experiments, including X-ray absorption fine structure analyses and in situ infrared spectroscopy, we confirm that the unique selectivity change originates from the structure-dependent shift of active sites from the center Co atom to the O-adjacent C atom. We show this optimizes the electronic structure and *OOH adsorption behavior on active sites to give the present "best" activity and selectivity of >95% for acidic H2O2 electrosynthesis.

Tailoring Acidic Oxygen Reduction Selectivity on Single-Atom Catalysts via Modification of First and Second Coordination Spheres.

With many apparent advantages including high surface area, tunable pore sizes and topologies, and diverse periodic organic-inorganic ingredients, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been identified as versatile precursors or sacrificial templates for preparing functional materials as advanced electrodes or high-efficiency catalysts for electrochemical energy storage and conversion (EESC) In this Mini Review, we first briefly summarize the material design strategies to show the rich possibilities of the chemical compositions and physical structures of MOFs derivatives We next highlight the latest advances focusing on the composition/structure/performance relationship and discuss their practical applications in various EESC systems, such as supercapacitors, rechargeable batteries, fuel cells, water electrolyzers, and carbon dioxide/nitrogen reduction reactions Finally, we provide some of our own insights into the major challenges and prospective solutions of MOF-derived functional materials for EESC, hoping to shed some light on the future development of this highly exciting field

Understanding the structure-performance relationship of active sites at atomic scale

Tuning metal–support interaction has been considered as an effective approach to modulate the electronic structure and catalytic activity of supported metal catalysts. At the atomic level, the understanding of the structure–activity relationship still remains obscure in heterogeneous catalysis, such as the conversion of water (alkaline) or hydronium ions (acid) to hydrogen (hydrogen evolution reaction, HER). Here, we reveal that the fine control over the oxidation states of single-atom Pt catalysts through electronic metal–support interaction significantly modulates the catalytic activities in either acidic or alkaline HER. Combined with detailed spectroscopic and electrochemical characterizations, the structure–activity relationship is established by correlating the acidic/alkaline HER activity with the average oxidation state of single-atom Pt and the Pt–H/Pt–OH interaction. This study sheds light on the atomic-level mechanistic understanding of acidic and alkaline HER, and further provides guidelines for the rational design of high-performance single-atom catalysts. Insights into the rational design of single-atom metal catalysts remains obscure in heterogeneous catalysis. Here, the authors establish the atomic-level structure–activity relationship for a wide-pH-range hydrogen evolution reaction through the electronic metal–support interaction modulation.

Electronic metal-support interaction modulates single-atom platinum catalysis for hydrogen evolution reaction.

Demonstrated here is the correlation between atomic configuration induced electronic density of single-atom Co active sites and oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) performance by combining density-functional theory (DFT) calculations and electrochemical analysis. Guided by DFT calculations, a MOF-derived Co single-atom catalyst with the optimal Co1 -N3 PS active moiety incorporated in a hollow carbon polyhedron (Co1 -N3 PS/HC) was designed and synthesized. Co1 -N3 PS/HC exhibits outstanding alkaline ORR activity with a half-wave potential of 0.920 V and superior ORR kinetics with record-level kinetic current density and an ultralow Tafel slope of 31 mV dec-1 , exceeding that of Pt/C and almost all non-precious ORR electrocatalysts. In acidic media the ORR kinetics of Co1 -N3 PS/HC still surpasses that of Pt/C. This work offers atomic-level insight into the relationship between electronic density of the active site and catalytic properties, promoting rational design of efficient catalysts.

Atomic-Level Modulation of Electronic Density at Cobalt Single-Atom Sites Derived from Metal-Organic Frameworks: Enhanced Oxygen Reduction Performance.

The modulation effect has been widely investigated to tune the electronic state of single-atomic M-N-C catalysts to enhance the activity of oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). However, the in-depth study of modulation effect is rarely reported for the isolated dual-atomic metal sites. Now, the catalytic activities of Fe-N4 moiety can be enhanced by the adjacent Pt-N4 moiety through the modulation effect, in which the Pt-N4 acts as the modulator to tune the 3d electronic orbitals of Fe-N4 active site and optimize ORR activity. Inspired by this principle, we design and synthesize the electrocatalyst that comprises isolated Fe-N4 /Pt-N4 moieties dispersed in the nitrogen-doped carbon matrix (Fe-N4 /Pt-N4 @NC) and exhibits a half-wave potential of 0.93 V vs. RHE and negligible activity degradation (ΔE1/2 =8 mV) after 10000 cycles in 0.1 M KOH. We also demonstrate that the modulation effect is not effective for optimizing the ORR performances of Co-N4 /Pt-N4 and Mn-N4 /Pt-N4 systems.
