Imaging the Photochemical Ring-Opening of 1,3-Cyclohexadiene by Ultrafast Electron Diffraction
Thomas J. A. Wolf,D. M. Sanchez,Jie Yang,Robert M. Parrish,J. P. F. Nunes,Martin Centurion,R. Coffee,James P. Cryan,Markus Gühr,Kareem Hegazy,Adam Kirrander,Renkai Li,Jennifer M. Ruddock,Xiaozhe Shen,Theodore Veccione,S. P. Weathersby,Peter M. Weber,Kyle J. Wilkin,Haiwang Yong,Qiang Zheng,Xijie Wang,Michael P. Minitti,Todd J. Martínez +22 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors observed a substantial acceleration of the ring-opening motion after internal conversion to the ground state due to steepening of the electronic potential gradient towards the product minima and demonstrated the potential of megaelectronvolt ultrafast electron diffraction to elucidate photochemical reaction paths in organic chemistry.
Journal ArticleDOI
The photochemical ring-opening of 1,3-cyclohexadiene imaged by ultrafast electron diffraction.
Thomas J. A. Wolf,D. M. Sanchez,D. M. Sanchez,Jie Yang,Robert M. Parrish,Robert M. Parrish,J. P. F. Nunes,J. P. F. Nunes,Martin Centurion,Ryan Coffee,James P. Cryan,Markus Gühr,Markus Gühr,Kareem Hegazy,Kareem Hegazy,Adam Kirrander,Renkai Li,Jennifer M. Ruddock,Xiaozhe Shen,Theodore Vecchione,Stephen Weathersby,Peter M. Weber,Kyle J. Wilkin,Haiwang Yong,Qiang Zheng,Xijie Wang,Michael P. Minitti,Todd J. Martínez,Todd J. Martínez +28 more
TL;DR: The photochemical electrocyclic ring-opening of 1,3-cyclohexadiene is a textbook organic chemistry reaction that is resolved on the level of atomic distances and on its natural femtosecond timescale using megaelectronvolt ultrafast electron diffraction.
Journal ArticleDOI
Ultrafast X-ray scattering reveals vibrational coherence following Rydberg excitation.
Brian Stankus,Haiwang Yong,Nikola Zotev,Jennifer M. Ruddock,Darren Bellshaw,Thomas J. Lane,Mengning Liang,Sébastien Boutet,Sergio Carbajo,Joseph Robinson,Wenpeng Du,Nathan Goff,Yu Chang,Jason E. Koglin,Michael P. Minitti,Adam Kirrander,Peter M. Weber +16 more
TL;DR: Ultrafast X-ray scattering combined with a detailed structural determination analysis precisely measures the coherent vibrational motions of a polyatomic organic molecule following photoexcitation.
Journal ArticleDOI
Determining Orientations of Optical Transition Dipole Moments Using Ultrafast X-ray Scattering.
Haiwang Yong,Nikola Zotev,Brian Stankus,Jennifer M. Ruddock,Darren Bellshaw,Sébastien Boutet,Thomas J. Lane,Mengning Liang,Sergio Carbajo,Joseph Robinson,Wenpeng Du,Nathan Goff,Yu Chang,Jason E. Koglin,Max D. J. Waters,Theis I. Sølling,Michael P. Minitti,Adam Kirrander,Peter M. Weber +18 more
TL;DR: It is shown that the initially excited electronic state can be determined using the anisotropic component of ultrafast time-resolved X-ray scattering signals and is identified as the 3p z Rydberg state, thus bypassing the need for further experimental studies to determine the starting point of the photoinduced dynamics and clarifying inconsistent computational results.
Journal ArticleDOI
Observation of the molecular response to light upon photoexcitation.
Haiwang Yong,Nikola Zotev,Jennifer M. Ruddock,Jennifer M. Ruddock,Brian Stankus,Mats Simmermacher,Andrés Moreno Carrascosa,Wenpeng Du,Nathan Goff,Yu Chang,Darren Bellshaw,Mengning Liang,Sergio Carbajo,Jason E. Koglin,Joseph Robinson,Sébastien Boutet,Michael P. Minitti,Adam Kirrander,Peter M. Weber +18 more
TL;DR: A direct measurement of the initial redistribution of electron density when the molecule 1,3-cyclohexadiene (CHD) is optically excited is reported, which is a fundamental process that leads to changes in the electron density in matter.
