Journal ArticleDOI
Host-pathogen interaction in invasive Salmonellosis.
Hanna K. de Jong,Christopher M. Parry,Christopher M. Parry,Tom van der Poll,W. Joost Wiersinga +4 more
TL;DR: Virulence factors, most notably, type III secretion systems, Vi antigen, lipopolysaccharide and other surface polysaccharides, flagella, and various factors essential for the intracellular life cycle of S. enterica have been characterized.
Journal ArticleDOI
The systemic pro-inflammatory response in sepsis.
TL;DR: Dissection of the role of host-pathogen interactions, the cytokine network, the coagulation cascade, the complement system and their multidirectional interactions in sepsis will pave the way for new treatment targets that can modify the excessive and collective activation of all these systems.
Journal ArticleDOI
Glyburide reduces bacterial dissemination in a mouse model of melioidosis.
Gavin C. K. W. Koh,Tassili A. F. Weehuizen,Katrin Breitbach,Kathrin Krause,Hanna K. de Jong,Liesbeth M. Kager,AJ Hoogendijk,Antje Bast,Sharon J. Peacock,Sharon J. Peacock,Tom van der Poll,Ivo Steinmetz,W. Joost Wiersinga +12 more
TL;DR: It is shown, for the first time in any model of sepsis, that glyburide acts as an anti-inflammatory agent by reducing IL1β secretion accompanied by diminished cellular influx and reduced bacterial dissemination to distant organs.
Journal ArticleDOI
Limited role for ASC and NLRP3 during in vivo Salmonella Typhimurium infection
Hanna K. de Jong,Gavin C. K. W. Koh,Miriam H. P. van Lieshout,Joris J. T. H. Roelofs,Jaap T. van Dissel,Tom van der Poll,W. Joost Wiersinga +6 more
TL;DR: The results reveal a limited role for ASC and NLRP3 during in vivo S. Typhimurium infection despite its role in cytokine maturation.
Journal ArticleDOI
Expression and Function of S100A8/A9 (Calprotectin) in Human Typhoid Fever and the Murine Salmonella Model
Hanna K. de Jong,Ahmed Achouiti,Gavin C. K. W. Koh,Christopher M. Parry,Stephen Baker,M A Faiz,Jaap T. van Dissel,Albert M Vollaard,Ester M. M. van Leeuwen,Joris J. T. H. Roelofs,Alex F. de Vos,Johannes Roth,Tom van der Poll,Thomas Vogl,Willem Joost Wiersinga +14 more
TL;DR: S100A8/A9 is markedly elevated in human typhoid, correlates with duration of fever prior to admission and directly inhibits the growth of S. Typhi in vitro.
