This study explores the links between land ownership contention, private violence and the state. Colombia presents a context where criminal actors participate in the regular functioning of public institutions. The study rejects normative conceptions about the link between criminal actors and the state. Crime and violence are not considered as extraneous factors, separated from the political game; they are analyzed as constitutive of logics of competition, accumulation and economic development, ultimately, elements in the process of state formation.

<titre>Résumé</titre>Cet article étudie le rôle central des petites mains de la politique à Mexico qui construisent du lien politique local mais aussi national dans et depuis le quartier. L’auteur propose la notion d’intermédiaire du quotidien : un habitant du quartier qui, de par son insertion dans des réseaux de sociabilités locales, une disponibilité spécifique et ses savoir-faire (militants) discrets, accompagne ses voisins dans leur pratique du politique et de l’administration, par un travail invisible et invisibilisé. En décalant le regard de l’action contestataire vers la routine du quotidien se dévoilent donc des savoir-faire généralement invisibilisés par les collectifs militants, mais aussi les boîtes à outils analytiques du sociologue : la capacité à simplement être là, mais surtout y rester en période de contestation, à être toujours disponible et accessible pour ses voisins, à gérer l’attente dans la mobilisation et le rapport à l’administration. Dès lors, l’attente constitue une compétence militante fondamentale, tout comme la capacité à prendre la parole ou à utiliser des savoir-faire plus techniques.

Un intermédiaire du quotidien

Adhesively bonded joints used on spacecraft are subject to thermal cycling in orbit. Effect of this ageing is investigated in terms of polyepoxy adhesive properties and corresponding assemblies. A simplified isothermal ageing model is used to understand effect of temperature and secondary vacuum. Vacuum involves the same ageing phenomena than an ageing under neutral gaseous environment at atmospheric pressure. Temperature induces a post-curing of the adhesive. For the highest ageing temperature, a plasticization phenomenon is observed (glass transition temperature decrease). Thermal cycling leads to adhesive’s properties modifications similar to those monitored after an isothermal ageing. The effect of thermal cycle mainly depends on maximum temperature reached during a thermal cycle.

Purpose
Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a controversial psychiatric diagnosis. Despite an increasing amount of research looking at the BPD diagnosis when applied to young people, there is limited understanding of the key viewpoints of mental health professionals working with young people in the UK. This research aims to use Q-methodology to contribute to understanding the multiple views of the diagnosis.


Design/methodology/approach
Q-statements about views of the BPD diagnosis were selected from relevant journals, internet sites and social media platforms and were validated by a Q-methodology research group, the research supervisors and an online group of individuals with BPD. Q-sorts were then used to explore the viewpoints of 27 mental health professionals in the UK working with children and adolescents. Analysis of the data was completed using Q-methodology analysis software.


Findings
Three main factors emerged from the data, explaining 66% of the variance. Of the 27 participants, 24 loaded onto these three factors, defined as: harmful not helpful; language and optimism; and caution and specialist services. Three Q-sorts did not load significantly onto any one factor.


Originality/value
There appears to be at least three ways of understanding the BPD diagnosis for young people. It may be useful for clinicians to consider and share their own viewpoint, be open to difference and formulate difficulties from an individual perspective.
