Basics of qualitative research: Grounded theory procedures and techniques

Deposits of clastic carbonate-dominated (calciclastic) sedimentary slope systems in the rock record have been identified mostly as linearly-consistent carbonate apron deposits, even though most ancient clastic carbonate slope deposits fit the submarine fan systems better. Calciclastic submarine fans are consequently rarely described and are poorly understood. Subsequently, very little is known especially in mud-dominated calciclastic submarine fan systems. Presented in this study are a sedimentological core and petrographic characterisation of samples from eleven boreholes from the Lower Carboniferous of Bowland Basin (Northwest England) that reveals a >250 m thick calciturbidite complex deposited in a calciclastic submarine fan setting. Seven facies are recognised from core and thin section characterisation and are grouped into three carbonate turbidite sequences. They include: 1) Calciturbidites, comprising mostly of highto low-density, wavy-laminated bioclast-rich facies; 2) low-density densite mudstones which are characterised by planar laminated and unlaminated muddominated facies; and 3) Calcidebrites which are muddy or hyper-concentrated debrisflow deposits occurring as poorly-sorted, chaotic, mud-supported floatstones. The knowledge-creating company : how Japanese companies create the dynamics of innovation

Determining the power demand of mobile applications (apps) is becoming a key area of interest for both end-users and developers due to the limited battery lifetime of mobile devices. Addressing this issue requires tools that measure the power demand of a mobile app. This power demand depends on the hardware components and the called operations of the mobile app. Therefore, this paper presents a prototype that records the power demand of hardware components and called operations of running mobile apps. This data can help developers in determining the cause of high power demand of their apps, which assists in power demand reduction. This paper covers an analysis of the overhead produced by the prototype and an evaluation that includes: firstly the evaluation of the accuracy of the total power demand measurements, secondly the evaluation for the allocation of the GPS power demand of the operations and thirdly the evaluation of the allocation of the CPU power demand of the operations.

Meditec is a German manufacturer of instruments for surgeries. The company is quality leader in this sector and supplies many German and international hospitals. However, the opportunities for differentiation against competitors decrease continuously. New competitors from emerging markets are challenging the market position of established companies in this industry. Meditec is therefore forced to change its strategy and business model in order to survive in this novel competitive environment. The management of Meditec has decided to traverse from a pure product manufacturer to a customer-centric solution provider. This transformation requires the development of new processes, competencies and capabilities – especially with respect to IT and IT services. This teaching case helps in understanding the role of IT in product-service systems (PSS) and PSS-based business models. Therefore the case illustrates why IT is necessary to establish a PSS-based business model and why a customer-centric view is important for this kind of business model.

Der Einsatz zentraler Datenverarbeitungssysteme verursacht vielfaltige organisatorische Auswirkungen. Sie spiegeln sich vor allem in Anderungen der Ablaufstruktur wieder. Der Einsatz von Computer-am-Arbeitsplatz-Systemen hat Gestaltungsmoglichkeiten wie Abteilungsstrukturierung, Arbeitsstrukturierung oder Dialogstrukturierung zur Folge. Die Analyse der dann auftretenden Veranderungen wird durch eine Simulation der Ablaufe unterstutzt. Ein Werkzeug zur benutzerfreundlichen Durchfuhrung solcher Simulationen stellt das Softwaresystem CAPSIM dar.

This chapter presents a holistic approach for systematically managing open-innovation communities (OICs) on the Internet. Based on existing innovation and virtual community management approaches, an open-innovation community scorecard is developed that consists of an innovation process, a community member, an organizational learning and a financial perspective. The scorecard helps operators of OIC to systematically manage their OIC in order to harness the full potential of this mode of customer integration. An innovation performance measurement perspective is used and the most important goals of such OICs are transformed into operations that can be measured and managed. Based on its implementation at the software producer SAP, suggestions for its implementation are offered.
