Basics of qualitative research: Grounded theory procedures and techniques

Deposits of clastic carbonate-dominated (calciclastic) sedimentary slope systems in the rock record have been identified mostly as linearly-consistent carbonate apron deposits, even though most ancient clastic carbonate slope deposits fit the submarine fan systems better. Calciclastic submarine fans are consequently rarely described and are poorly understood. Subsequently, very little is known especially in mud-dominated calciclastic submarine fan systems. Presented in this study are a sedimentological core and petrographic characterisation of samples from eleven boreholes from the Lower Carboniferous of Bowland Basin (Northwest England) that reveals a >250 m thick calciturbidite complex deposited in a calciclastic submarine fan setting. Seven facies are recognised from core and thin section characterisation and are grouped into three carbonate turbidite sequences. They include: 1) Calciturbidites, comprising mostly of highto low-density, wavy-laminated bioclast-rich facies; 2) low-density densite mudstones which are characterised by planar laminated and unlaminated muddominated facies; and 3) Calcidebrites which are muddy or hyper-concentrated debrisflow deposits occurring as poorly-sorted, chaotic, mud-supported floatstones. The knowledge-creating company : how Japanese companies create the dynamics of innovation

In 1999, the automotive industry was in a difficult situation: overcapacity and customer demand for faster delivery and better service drove executives to explore the potential business value of the internet. The authors provide a teaching case, which is based on an analysis of the DCXNET initiative which bundled all e-business actions taken by DaimlerChrysler to exploit the opportunities of this then new technology. The teaching case describes the strategic planning process for e-business at DaimlerChrysler, resulting organizational structures and an outline of the components of DCXNET. Furthermore, the authors provide results of the initiative, success factors and lessons learned.

DCXNET: e-transformation at DaimlerChrysler

Research indicates that social networking sites can be used to foster social interaction and reduce the risk of social isolation for the elderly demographic segment. Collaborative consumption, a new evolutionary step in SNS, enables the sharing of personal services, thus holding the potential to strengthen social integration and enable an independent lifestyle for the elderly. We therefore developed a local, service-oriented collaborative consumption platform called "Bring Dich ein!" with the purpose of facilitating social interaction across generations as well as the trade of peer-to-peer services. The platform was fully implemented in a participatory development process and evaluated in an extended pilot phase. The qualitative evaluation shows good usability for the elderly and high potential for the proposed concept within the target group.

Design and evaluation of a service-oriented collaborative consumption platform for the elderly

Integrated product-service packages (hybrid products) can open new markets and target groups to companies. However, existing approaches to service or product development do not sufficiently address simultaneous development and domain-specific issues. A very promising new field for such bundles is the health and fitness industry. In this research, we designed and built an IT-supported training system for running, the Mobile Sports Companion (MSC), which closely interlocks a product and corresponding services using an iterative development process. We tested the pilot system with 14 recreational athletes. The results of the field test show that the MSC proved to be a promising tool to offer athletes an effective individual, flexible, and mobile training. However, the system, as it is, did not sufficiently represent the human trainer behind it, thus lowering its acceptance and the credibility of its recommendations. Our next step is to integrate features that could strengthen the athlete-trainer relationship. The MSC could turn out to be a promising field for future e-business applications in the sports service industry.

Hybrid Value Creation in the Sports Industry: The Case of a Mobile Sports Companion as IT-Supported Product-Service-Bundle

Although research and practice has attributed considerable attention to Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) projects their failure rate is still high. There are two main fields of research, which aim at increasing the success rate of ERP projects: Research on risk factors and research on success factors. Despite their topical relatedness, efforts to integrate these two fields have been rare. Against this background, this paper analyzes 68 articles dealing with risk and success factors and categorizes all identified factors into twelve categories. Though some topics are equally important in risk and success factor research, the literature on risk factors emphasizes topics which ensure achieving budget, schedule and functionality targets. In contrast, the literature on success factors concentrates more on strategic and organizational topics. We argue that both fields of research cover important aspects of project success. The paper concludes with the presentation of a possible holistic consideration to integrate both, the understanding of risk and success factors.
