Journal ArticleDOI
Enhancement of the Antibiotic Activity against a Multiresistant Escherichia coli by Mentha arvensis L. and Chlorpromazine
Henrique Douglas Melo Coutinho,José Galberto Martins da Costa,Edeltrudes de Oliveira Lima,Vivyanne S. Falcão-Silva,José P. Siqueira-Júnior +4 more
TL;DR: It is suggested that extracts from M. arvensis could be used as a source of plant-derived natural products with resistance-modifying activity, such as in the case of gentamicin, constituting a new weapon against bacterial resistance to antibiotics, as with chlorpromazine.
Journal ArticleDOI
Advances in Chemical and Biological Methods to Identify Microorganisms-From Past to Present
Ricardo Franco-Duarte,Lucia Černáková,Snehal Kadam,Karishma S. Kaushik,Bahare Salehi,Antonio Bevilacqua,Maria Rosaria Corbo,Hubert Antolak,Katarzyna Dybka-Stępień,Martyna Leszczewicz,Saulo R. Tintino,Veruska Cintia Alexandrino de Souza,Javad Sharifi-Rad,Henrique Douglas Melo Coutinho,Natália Martins,Célia F. Rodrigues +15 more
TL;DR: The goal of this review is to present the past and the present methods of detection and identification of microorganisms, and to discuss their advantages and their limitations.
Journal ArticleDOI
Antimicrobial and enhancement of the antibiotic activity by phenolic compounds: Gallic acid, caffeic acid and pyrogallol
Valéria N. Lima,Cícera Datiane de Morais Oliveira-Tintino,Enaide Soares Santos,Luís Pereira de Morais,Saulo R. Tintino,Thiago Sampaio de Freitas,Yuri S. Geraldo,Raimundo Luiz Silva Pereira,Rafael Pereira da Cruz,Irwin Rose Alencar de Menezes,Henrique Douglas Melo Coutinho +10 more
TL;DR: Gallic acid, caffeic acid and pyrogallol presented as substances that can be promising potentiating agents of antimicrobial drugs, even though they do not have direct antibacterial and antifungal action.
Journal ArticleDOI
In vitro anti-staphylococcal activity of Hyptis martiusii Benth against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus: MRSA strains
Henrique Douglas Melo Coutinho,José Galberto Martins da Costa,José P. Siqueira-Júnior,Edeltrudes de Oliveira Lima +3 more
TL;DR: It is suggested that extracts from H. martiusii could be used as an anti-Staphylococcus agent, being a promising antibacterial agent.
Journal ArticleDOI
Synergistic antibiotic activity of volatile compounds from the essential oil of Lippia sidoides and thymol.
Helenicy N.H. Veras,Fabíola F.G. Rodrigues,Aracélio Viana Colares,Irwin Rose Alencar de Menezes,Henrique Douglas Melo Coutinho,Marco Antonio Botelho,José Galberto Martins da Costa +6 more
TL;DR: The essential oil of L. sidoides and its major component thymol influence the activity of aminoglycosides and may be used as adjuvant in antibiotic therapy against respiratory tract bacterial pathogens.
