In the classical theory black holes can only absorb and not emit particles. However it is shown that quantum mechanical effects cause black holes to create and emit particles as if they were hot bodies with temperature\(\frac{{h\kappa }}{{2\pi k}} \approx 10^{ - 6} \left( {\frac{{M_ \odot }}{M}} \right){}^ \circ K\) where κ is the surface gravity of the black hole. This thermal emission leads to a slow decrease in the mass of the black hole and to its eventual disappearance: any primordial black hole of mass less than about 1015 g would have evaporated by now. Although these quantum effects violate the classical law that the area of the event horizon of a black hole cannot decrease, there remains a Generalized Second Law:S+1/4A never decreases whereS is the entropy of matter outside black holes andA is the sum of the surface areas of the event horizons. This shows that gravitational collapse converts the baryons and leptons in the collapsing body into entropy. It is tempting to speculate that this might be the reason why the Universe contains so much entropy per baryon.

Particle Creation by Black Holes

We introduce the Virgo Consortium's EAGLE project, a suite of hydrodynamical simulations that follow the formation of galaxies and black holes in representative volumes. We discuss the limitations of such simulations in light of their finite resolution and poorly constrained subgrid physics, and how these affect their predictive power. One major improvement is our treatment of feedback from massive stars and AGN in which thermal energy is injected into the gas without the need to turn off cooling or hydrodynamical forces, allowing winds to develop without predetermined speed or mass loading factors. Because the feedback efficiencies cannot be predicted from first principles, we calibrate them to the z~0 galaxy stellar mass function and the amplitude of the galaxy-central black hole mass relation, also taking galaxy sizes into account. The observed galaxy mass function is reproduced to ≲0.2 dex over the full mass range, 108<M∗/M⊙≲1011, a level of agreement close to that attained by semi-analytic models, and unprecedented for hydrodynamical simulations. We compare our results to a representative set of low-redshift observables not considered in the calibration, and find good agreement with the observed galaxy specific star formation rates, passive fractions, Tully-Fisher relation, total stellar luminosities of galaxy clusters, and column density distributions of intergalactic CIV and OVI. While the mass-metallicity relations for gas and stars are consistent with observations for M∗≳109M⊙, they are insufficiently steep at lower masses. The gas fractions and temperatures are too high for clusters of galaxies, but for groups these discrepancies can be resolved by adopting a higher heating temperature in the subgrid prescription for AGN feedback. EAGLE constitutes a valuable new resource for studies of galaxy formation.

This paper is divided into four parts. In part A, some general considerations about gravitational radiation are followed by a treatment of the scalar wave equation in the manner later to be applied to Einstein’s field equations. In part B, a co-ordinate system is specified which is suitable for investigation of outgoing gravitational waves from an isolated axi-symmetric reflexion-symmetric system . The metric is expanded in negative powers of a suitably defined radial co-ordinate r , and the vacuum field equations are investigated in detail. It is shown that the flow of information to infinity is controlled by a single function of two variables called the news function. Together with initial conditions specified on a light cone, this function fully defines the behaviour of the system . No constraints of any kind are encountered. In part C, the transformations leaving the metric in the chosen form are determined. An investigation of the corresponding transformations in Minkowski space suggests that no generality is lost by assuming that the transformations, like the metric, may be expanded in negative powers of r . In part D, the mass of the system is defined in a way which in static metrics agrees with the usual definition. The principal result of the paper is then deduced, namely, that the mass of a system is constant if and only if there is no news; if there is news, the mass decreases monotonically so long as it continues. The linear approximation is next discussed, chiefly for its heuristic value, and employed in the analysis of a receiver for gravitational waves. Sandwich waves are constructed, and certain non-radiative but non-static solutions are discussed. This part concludes with a tentative classification of time-dependent solutions of the types considered.

Gravitational Waves in General Relativity. VII. Waves from Axi-Symmetric Isolated Systems

The article reviews the current status of a theoretical approach to the problem of the emission of gravitational waves by isolated systems in the context of general relativity. Part A of the article deals with general post-Newtonian sources. The exterior field of the source is investigated by means of a combination of analytic post-Minkowskian and multipolar approximations. The physical observables in the far-zone of the source are described by a specific set of radiative multipole moments. By matching the exterior solution to the metric of the postNewtonian source in the near-zone we obtain the explicit expressions of the source multipole moments. The relationships between the radiative and source moments involve many nonlinear multipole interactions, among them those associated with the tails (and tails-of-tails) of gravitational waves. Part B of the article is devoted to the application to compact binary systems. We present the equations of binary motion, and the associated Lagrangian and Hamiltonian, at the third post-Newtonian (3PN) order beyond the Newtonian acceleration. The gravitational-wave energy flux, taking consistently into account the relativistic corrections in the binary moments as well as the various tail eects, is derived through 3.5PN order with respect to the quadrupole formalism. The binary’s orbital phase, whose prior knowledge is crucial for searching and analyzing the signals from inspiralling compact binaries, is deduced from an energy balance argument.

Assumption and myth in physical theory

We study the effect of a plane gravitational wave of limited duration (‘sandwich wave’) on an infinite set of test particles at relative rest. We prove, at least for waves of fixed polarization, that all the particles strung out in a certain direction will collide after a finite time that is independent of how far apart they were originally. This we call the caustic property. The effect of the wave on null geodesics is such that this phenomenon does not require any particle to move faster than light. Indeed, an observer who has passed through such a wave will within a finite time have seen an infinite spatial volume lying in a space-like half­ hyperplane on the other side of the wave. For a certain (‘bicaustic’) type of wave the whole of that half-hyperplane will have become visible.

The problem tackled by B. K. Datta, [1] in a recent paper concerning non-static spherically symmetric systems in which the particle motion is, in a certain sense, purely transverse, is further developed and compared with the Newtonian case. A full classification of the possible motions is given.

On Datta's spherically symmetric systems in general relativity

In an earlier paper of the same general title (1) the possibility that the core of the Earth, in view of its supposed liquid nature, does not partake of the rigid-body motion of the outer shell was discussed with particular reference to the secular diminution of the angular velocity. In addition to this small rate of change of the magnitude of the angular velocity vector of the shell there occur changes in its direction consisting of the precession and nutation, but all the rates of change therein involved are small. The secular retardation takes place with extreme slowness, the nutations involve deviations of the axis with small angular amplitudes, while the precession, though of large angular amplitude, is of very long period compared with the rotation period of the Earth. Accordingly, it may be supposed that the effects of these various changes in the angular velocity can be considered separately in their relation to the motion within the core, and it is the object of this paper to give an account of our investigation into what may be termed for brevity the precession problem. It should perhaps be stated at the outset that the work does not constitute a solution of the problem, which our studies have led us to believe is one of the utmost mathematical difficulty presenting features of an exceptional character in hydro-dynamic theory. After first obtaining the equations of steady motion applicable to the interior, and those applicable to the boundary layer, the solution of the latter equations has been obtained; but in respect of the former equations we have been able to carry the question of the interior motion only as far as showing that no motion representable everywhere by analytic functions and consistent with the boundary conditions is possible. The investigation strongly suggests that no steady-state motion of a permanent character is possible for the interior, though the precise nature of the motion that actually occurs poses a problem of special interest from a hydrodynamic standpoint, but it is one to which we are not able to arrive at any definite answer at present. Without making any progress with the problem thus produced, the paper nevertheless makes clear the inherent difficulties of the problem and also serves to emphasize the inadequacy of any simplified mode of attack assuming classical fluid and resembling, for example, Poincare's method for the nutation problem adopted by Lamb (3). Thus despite its incompleteness it seemed worth while to publish some account of such progress with these highly interesting questions as we have been able to make.
