Journal ArticleDOI
Metagenomic analysis of nitrate-reducing bacteria in the oral cavity: implications for nitric oxide homeostasis.
Embriette R. Hyde,Fernando Andrade,Zalman Vaksman,Kavitha Parthasarathy,Hong Jiang,Deepa K. Parthasarathy,Ashley C. Torregrossa,Gena D. Tribble,Heidi B. Kaplan,Joseph F. Petrosino,Nathan S. Bryan +10 more
TL;DR: The results provide a possible new therapeutic target and paradigm for NO restoration in humans by specific oral bacteria, and may also provide mechanistic evidence for the oral systemic link.
Journal ArticleDOI
Dietary nitrite improves insulin signaling through GLUT4 translocation.
Hong Jiang,Ashley C. Torregrossa,Amy Potts,Dan Pierini,Mayank Aranke,Harsha K. Garg,Nathan S. Bryan +6 more
TL;DR: It is suggested that nitrite improves insulin signaling through restoration of NO-dependent nitrosation of GLUT4 signaling translocation and may justify a high-nitrate/nitrite diet along with the glycemic index to provide a safe and nutritional regimen for the management and treatment of diabetes.
Journal ArticleDOI
Nitrite and nitrate: cardiovascular risk–benefit and metabolic effect
TL;DR: The collective body of evidence suggests that foods enriched in nitrite and nitrate provide significant health benefits with very little risk, contradict decades of epidemiological research that have suggested an association of nitrites in foods, primarily cured and processed meat, with certain cancers.
Journal ArticleDOI
Argininosuccinate Lyase Deficiency Causes an Endothelial-Dependent Form of Hypertension
Jordan Kho,Xiao Yu Tian,Wing Tak Wong,Terry Bertin,Ming-Ming Jiang,Shan Chen,Zixue Jin,Oleg A. Shchelochkov,Lindsay C. Burrage,Anilkumar K. Reddy,Hong Jiang,Reem Abo-Zahrah,Shuangtao Ma,Ping Zhang,Karl-Dimiter Bissig,Karl-Dimiter Bissig,Jean J. Kim,Sridevi Devaraj,George G. Rodney,Ayelet Erez,Ayelet Erez,Nathan S. Bryan,Sandesh C.S. Nagamani,Brendan Lee +23 more
TL;DR: It is shown that the urea cycle disorder, argininosuccinate lyase deficiency (ASLD), can manifest as a Mendelian form of endothelial-dependent hypertension and that ASLD is a unique model for studying NO-dependent endothelial dysfunction in human hypertension.
Journal ArticleDOI
Sodium nitrite supplementation improves motor function and skeletal muscle inflammatory profile in old male mice
Jamie N. Justice,Rachel A. Gioscia-Ryan,Lawrence C. Johnson,Micah L. Battson,Natalie de Picciotto,Hannah J. Beck,Hong Jiang,Amy L. Sindler,Nathan S. Bryan,Roger M. Enoka,Douglas R. Seals +10 more
TL;DR: The results suggest that sodium nitrite improves motor function in old mice, in part by reducing low-grade inflammation in muscle.
