Selective catalytic reduction with NH3 (NH3-SCR) is the most efficient technology to reduce the emission of nitrogen oxides (NOx) from coal-fired industries, diesel engines, etc. Although V2O5-WO3(MoO3)/TiO2 and CHA structured zeolite catalysts have been utilized in commercial applications, the increasing requirements for broad working temperature window, strong SO2/alkali/heavy metal-resistance, and high hydrothermal stability have stimulated the development of new-type NH3-SCR catalysts. This review summarizes the latest SCR reaction mechanisms and emerging poison-resistant mechanisms in the beginning and subsequently gives a comprehensive overview of newly developed SCR catalysts, including metal oxide catalysts ranging from VOx, MnOx, CeO2, and Fe2O3 to CuO based catalysts; acidic compound catalysts containing vanadate, phosphate and sulfate catalysts; ion exchanged zeolite catalysts such as Fe, Cu, Mn, etc. exchanged zeolite catalysts; monolith catalysts including extruded, washcoated, and metal-mesh/foam-based monolith catalysts. The challenges and opportunities for each type of catalysts are proposed while the effective strategies are summarized for enhancing the acidity/redox circle and poison-resistance through modification, creating novel nanostructures, exposing specific crystalline planes, constructing protective/sacrificial sites, etc. Some suggestions are given about future research directions that efforts should be made in. Hopefully, this review can bridge the gap between newly developed catalysts and practical requirements to realize their commercial applications in the near future.

The development of Cu-chabazite (CHA) catalysts, i.e. Cu-SSZ-13 and Cu-SAPO-34, represents a significant technology breakthrough for the removal of NOx by selective catalytic reduction (SCR) with ammonia. Cu-CHA catalysts show an excellent hydrothermal stability towards high temperature aging and wide active temperature windows for the ammonia SCR reaction. This work summarizes the recent progress in the development of the Cu-CHA catalysts for the NH3-SCR reaction. The state of Cu in the reaction and the preparation methods on the catalytic performance are discussed. The advances in the understanding of the reaction mechanism are reviewed. The hydrothermal stability of the typical Cu-CHA catalysts are compared.

Recent advances in the selective catalytic reduction of NOx with NH3 on Cu-Chabazite catalysts

Controlling the physical and chemical properties of alloy nanoparticles (NPs) is an important approach to optimize NP catalysis. Unlike other tuning knobs, such as size, shape, and composition, crystal structure has received limited attention and not been well understood for its role in catalysis. This deficiency is mainly due to the difficulty in synthesis and fine-tuning of the NPs’ crystal structure. Here, Exemplifying by AuCu alloy NPs with face centered cubic (fcc) and face centered tetragonal (fct) structure, we demonstrate a remarkable difference in phase segregation and catalytic performance depending on the crystal structure. During the thermal treatment in air, the Cu component in fcc-AuCu alloy NPs segregates more easily onto the alloy surface as compared to that in fct-AuCu alloy NPs. As a result, after annealing at 250 °C in air for 1 h, the fcc- and fct-AuCu alloy NPs are phase transferred into Au/CuO and AuCu/CuO core/shell structures, respectively. Crystal Structural Effect of AuCu Alloy Nanoparticles on Catalytic CO Oxidation

Reaction mechanisms and chemical kinetics of mercury transformation during coal combustion

Cerium-modified Cu-SSZ-13 catalysts were synthesized by an in situ hydrothermal method, and Ce was incorporated through ion exchange. The catalytic performance and N2 selectivity over prepared catalysts were evaluated in the selective catalytic reduction (SCR) of NOx by NH3. The physicochemical properties of the samples were characterized using XRD, SEM, H2-TPR, XPS, NMR, XAS, and N2 adsorption. The results indicated that Cu-SSZ-13 modified by Ce showed better NOx removal efficiency and aging resistance. The optimized condition was ion exchanged for 2 h in a cerous nitrate solution. The introduction of Ce effectively restrained the conversion of an active Cu component (Cu2+ → Cu+) during the hydrothermal aging. Ce3+ species strongly associated with molecular sieve carriers and only slight skeleton dealumination was observed on the sample exchanged for 2 h, thus resulting in the further stabilization of catalyst active centers, which consequently maintained the catalytic activity and antiaging ability.
