A significant modification to the additive all-atom CHARMM lipid force field (FF) is developed and applied to phospholipid bilayers with both choline and ethanolamine containing head groups and with both saturated and unsaturated aliphatic chains. Motivated by the current CHARMM lipid FF (C27 and C27r) systematically yielding values of the surface area per lipid that are smaller than experimental estimates and gel-like structures of bilayers well above the gel transition temperature, selected torsional, Lennard-Jones and partial atomic charge parameters were modified by targeting both quantum mechanical (QM) and experimental data. Update of the CHARMM All-Atom Additive Force Field for Lipids: Validation on Six Lipid Types

Three-dimensional organic-inorganic perovskites have emerged as one of the most promising thin-film solar cell materials owing to their remarkable photophysical properties, which have led to power conversion efficiencies exceeding 20 per cent, with the prospect of further improvements towards the Shockley-Queisser limit for a single‐junction solar cell (33.5 per cent). Besides efficiency, another critical factor for photovoltaics and other optoelectronic applications is environmental stability and photostability under operating conditions. In contrast to their three-dimensional counterparts, Ruddlesden-Popper phases--layered two-dimensional perovskite films--have shown promising stability, but poor efficiency at only 4.73 per cent. This relatively poor efficiency is attributed to the inhibition of out-of-plane charge transport by the organic cations, which act like insulating spacing layers between the conducting inorganic slabs. Here we overcome this issue in layered perovskites by producing thin films of near-single-crystalline quality, in which the crystallographic planes of the inorganic perovskite component have a strongly preferential out-of-plane alignment with respect to the contacts in planar solar cells to facilitate efficient charge transport. We report a photovoltaic efficiency of 12.52 per cent with no hysteresis, and the devices exhibit greatly improved stability in comparison to their three-dimensional counterparts when subjected to light, humidity and heat stress tests. Unencapsulated two-dimensional perovskite devices retain over 60 per cent of their efficiency for over 2,250 hours under constant, standard (AM1.5G) illumination, and exhibit greater tolerance to 65 per cent relative humidity than do three-dimensional equivalents. When the devices are encapsulated, the layered devices do not show any degradation under constant AM1.5G illumination or humidity. We anticipate that these results will lead to the growth of single-crystalline, solution-processed, layered, hybrid, perovskite thin films, which are essential for high-performance opto-electronic devices with technologically relevant long-term stability.

High-efficiency two-dimensional Ruddlesden–Popper perovskite solar cells

Although known since the late 19th century, organic–inorganic perovskites have recently received extraordinary research community attention because of their unique physical properties, which make them promising candidates for application in photovoltaic (PV) and related optoelectronic devices. This review will explore beyond the current focus on three-dimensional (3-D) lead(II) halide perovskites, to highlight the great chemical flexibility and outstanding potential of the broader class of 3-D and lower dimensional organic-based perovskite family for electronic, optical, and energy-based applications as well as fundamental research. The concept of a multifunctional organic–inorganic hybrid, in which the organic and inorganic structural components provide intentional, unique, and hopefully synergistic features to the compound, represents an important contemporary target.

Organic–Inorganic Perovskites: Structural Versatility for Functional Materials Design

Organometal halide perovskites exhibit large bulk crystal domain sizes, rare traps, excellent mobilities and carriers that are free at room temperature-properties that support their excellent performance in charge-separating devices. In devices that rely on the forward injection of electrons and holes, such as light-emitting diodes (LEDs), excellent mobilities contribute to the efficient capture of non-equilibrium charge carriers by rare non-radiative centres. Moreover, the lack of bound excitons weakens the competition of desired radiative (over undesired non-radiative) recombination. Here we report a perovskite mixed material comprising a series of differently quantum-size-tuned grains that funnels photoexcitations to the lowest-bandgap light-emitter in the mixture. The materials function as charge carrier concentrators, ensuring that radiative recombination successfully outcompetes trapping and hence non-radiative recombination. We use the new material to build devices that exhibit an external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 8.8% and a radiance of 80 W sr-1 m-2. These represent the brightest and most efficient solution-processed near-infrared LEDs to date.

Perovskite energy funnels for efficient light-emitting diodes

Two-dimensional hybrid perovskites are used as absorbers in solar cells. Our first-generation devices containing (PEA)2(MA)2[Pb3I10] (1; PEA=C6H5(CH2)2NH3+, MA=CH3NH3+) show an open-circuit voltage of 1.18 V and a power conversion efficiency of 4.73 %. The layered structure allows for high-quality films to be deposited through spin coating and high-temperature annealing is not required for device fabrication. The 3D perovskite (MA)[PbI3] (2) has recently been identified as a promising absorber for solar cells. However, its instability to moisture requires anhydrous processing and operating conditions. Films of 1 are more moisture resistant than films of 2 and devices containing 1 can be fabricated under ambient humidity levels. The larger bandgap of the 2D structure is also suitable as the higher bandgap absorber in a dual-absorber tandem device. Compared to 2, the layered perovskite structure may offer greater tunability at the molecular level for material optimization.

A Layered Hybrid Perovskite Solar-Cell Absorber with Enhanced Moisture Stability

Deuterium (2H) nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) quadrupole splittings and relaxation times have been measured for a variety of specifically deuterated lipids intercalated in lamellar-multibilayer dispersions and single-bilayer vesicles of egg lecithin and lecithin-cholesterol mixtures. The deduced order parameters and relaxation times vary with position of deuteration, acyl chain length, unsaturation, and temperature. The order parameters and spinlattice relaxation times T1 indicate rapid intramolecular motions of restricted amplitude in both the choline head group and hydrocarbon chains. The ordering profile for the acyl chains is similar to that predicted by statistical-mechanical theory. The order parameters yield estimates of the bilayer thickness and linear coefficient of expansion in close agreement with the x-ray determinations. A comparison of the deuterium and electron spin resonance spinprobe order parameters demonstrates the perturbation of the bilayer by the bulky nitroxide probe. The transverse relaxation time T2 for single-bilayer vesicles is quantitatively accounted for by a simple modification of classical relaxation theory which takes into account the modulation of the static quadrupole interaction by rapid local molecular motions and the modulation of the residual quadrupole interaction by the slower overall tumbling of the vesicle. It is unambiguously demonstrated that molecular motion and order in single-bilayer vesicles are very similar to those in lamellar multibilayers. Significant differences occur only for a few segments near the terminal methyl groups of the acyl chains, where the order parameters for vesicles are 10-30% smaller than those found for lamellae. The incorporation of cholesterol in lecithin bilayers is shown to increase the degree of orientational order in vesicles and lamellae, and to increase the hydrodynamic radius of vesicles. Thus, single-bilayer vesicles and multilamellar dispersions of phospholipids are equally useful models for biological membranes. They yield equivalent information about the internal organization and mobility of lipid bilayers, when the spectral manifestations of overall vesicle motion are correctly taken into account.

The impressive rise in efficiencies of solar cells employing the three-dimensional (3D) lead–iodide perovskite absorbers APbI3 (A = monovalent cation) has generated intense excitement. Although these perovskites have remarkable properties as solar-cell absorbers, their potential commercialization now requires a greater focus on the materials’ inherent shortcomings and environmental impact. This creates a challenge and an opportunity for synthetic chemists to address these issues through the design of new materials. Synthetic chemistry offers powerful tools for manipulating the magnificent flexibility of the perovskite lattice to expand the number of functional analogues to APbI3. To highlight improvements that should be targeted in new materials, here we discuss the intrinsic instability and toxicity of 3D lead–halide perovskites.
