The science and technology of ultracapacitors are reviewed for a number of electrode materials, including carbon, mixed metal oxides, and conducting polymers. More work has been done using microporous carbons than with the other materials and most of the commercially available devices use carbon electrodes and an organic electrolytes. The energy density of these devices is 3¯5 Wh/kg with a power density of 300¯500 W/kg for high efficiency (90¯95%) charge/discharges. Projections of future developments using carbon indicate that energy densities of 10 Wh/kg or higher are likely with power densities of 1¯2 kW/kg. A key problem in the fabrication of these advanced devices is the bonding of the thin electrodes to a current collector such the contact resistance is less than 0.1 cm2. Special attention is given in the paper to comparing the power density characteristics of ultracapacitors and batteries. The comparisons should be made at the same charge/discharge efficiency.

Ultracapacitors: Why, How, and Where is the Technology

This paper presents an overview of the work done on graphene in recent years. It explains the preparation techniques, the properties of graphene related to its physio-chemical structure and some key applications. Graphene, due to its outstanding electrical, mechanical and thermal properties, has been one of the most popular choices to develop the electrodes of a sensor. It has been used in different forms including nanoparticle and oxide forms. Along with the preparation and properties of graphene, the categorization of the applications has been done based on the type of sensors. Comparisons between different research studies for each type have been made to highlight their performances. The challenges faced by the current graphene-based sensors along with some of the probable solutions and their future opportunities are also briefly explained in this paper.

Graphene and its sensor-based applications: A review

This paper provides a review on some of the significant research work done on wearable flexible sensors (WFSs). Sensors fabricated with the flexible materials have been attached to a person along with the embedded system to monitor a parameter and transfer the significant data to the monitoring unit for the further analyses. The use of wearable sensors has played a quite important role to monitor the physiological parameters of a person to minimize any malfunctioning happening in the body. This paper categorizes the work according to the materials used for designing the system, the network protocols, and different types of activities that were being monitored. The challenges faced by the current sensing systems and future opportunities for the WFSs regarding its market values are also briefly explained in this paper.

Biosensors, as an application for animal health management, are an emerging market that is quickly gaining recognition in the global market. Globally, a number of sensors being produced for animal health management are at various stages of commercialization. Some technologies for producing an accurate health status and disease diagnosis are applicable only for humans, with few modifications or testing in animal models. Now, these innovative technologies are being considered for their future use in livestock development and welfare. Precision livestock farming techniques, which include a wide span of technologies, are being applied, along with advanced technologies like microfluidics, sound analyzers, image-detection techniques, sweat and salivary sensing, serodiagnosis, and others. However, there is a need to integrate all the available sensors and create an efficient online monitoring system so that animal health status can be monitored in real time, without delay. This review paper discusses the scope of different wearable technologies for animals, nano biosensors and advanced molecular biology diagnostic techniques for the detection of various infectious diseases of cattle, along with the efforts to enlist and compare these technologies with respect to their drawbacks and advantages in the domain of animal health management. The paper considers all recent developments in the field of biosensors and their applications for animal health to provide insight regarding the appropriate approach to be used in the future of enhanced animal welfare.

Recent advances in wearable sensors for animal health management

Power electronics DC–DC converters are being widely used in various applications like hybrid energy systems, hybrid vehicles, aerospace, satellite applications and portable electronics devices. In the recent past, a lot of research and development has been carried out to enhance the reliability, efficiency, modularity and cost effectiveness of these converters. A number of new topologies have been proposed and new characteristics of power conversion have been defined. DC–DC converters have made a successful transition from single input–single output to multiinput–multioutput converters. These converters are now able to interface different level inputs and combine their advantages to feed the different level of outputs. Research is continued to bring down the cost and reduce the number of components while keeping the continuous improvement in the areas like reliability and efficiency of the overall system. The study of different multiinput DC–DC converter topologies suggests that there is no single topology which can handle the entire goals of cost, reliability, flexibility, efficiency and modularity single handed. This paper presents some of the recent trends in the development of multiinput and multioutput DC–DC converters. Methods to synthesize multiinput converters, their operational principles, merits and demerits are studied.

Multiinput DC–DC converters in renewable energy applications – An overview

This paper aims to present an intelligent system for parking space detection based on image processing technique. The proposed system captures and processes the rounded image drawn at parking lot and produces the information of the empty car parking spaces. In this work, a camera is used as a sensor to take photos to show the occupancy of car parks. The reason why a camera is used is because with an image it can detect the presence of many cars at once. Also, the camera can be easily moved to detect different car parking lots. By having this image, the particular car parks vacant can be known and then the processed information was used to guide a driver to an available car park rather than wasting time to find one. The proposed system has been developed in both software and hardware platform. An automatic parking system is used to make the whole process of parking cars more efficient and less complex for both drivers and administrators.

Intelligent Parking Management System Based on Image Processing

Technique for rapid detection of phthalates in water and beverages

Phthalate esters are ubiquitous environmental and food pollutants well known as endocrine disrupting compounds (EDCs). These developmental and reproductive toxicants pose a grave risk to the human health due to their unlimited use in consumer plastic industry. Detection of phthalates is strictly laboratory based time consuming and expensive process and requires expertise of highly qualified and skilled professionals. We present a real time, non-invasive, label free rapid detection technique to quantify phthalates' presence in deionized water and fruit juices. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) technique applied to a novel planar inter-digital (ID) capacitive sensor plays a vital role to explore the presence of phthalate esters in bulk fluid media. The ID sensor with multiple sensing gold electrodes was fabricated on silicon substrate using micro-electromechanical system (MEMS) device fabrication technology. A thin film of parylene C polymer was coated as a passivation layer to enhance the capacitive sensing capabilities of the sensor and to reduce the magnitude of Faradic current flowing through the sensor. Various concentrations, 0.002ppm through to 2ppm of di (2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) in deionized water, were exposed to the sensing system by dip testing method. Impedance spectra obtained was analysed to determine sample conductance which led to consequent evaluation of its dielectric properties. Electro-chemical impedance spectrum analyser algorithm was employed to model the experimentally obtained impedance spectra. Curve fitting technique was applied to deduce constant phase element (CPE) equivalent circuit based on Randle's equivalent circuit model. The sensing system was tested to detect different concentrations of DEHP in orange juice as a real world application. The result analysis indicated that our rapid testing technique is able to detect the presence of DEHP in all test samples distinctively.
