On megaloblastic anemia

Background Adolescence is the period of most rapid growth second to childhood. The physical and physiological changes that occur in adolescents place a great demand on their nutritional requirements and make them more vulnerable to anemia. Anemia in the adolescence causes reduced physical and mental capacity and diminished concentration in work and educational performance, and also poses a major threat to future safe motherhood in girls. The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence of anemia and its associated factors among school adolescents in Bonga Town, southwest Ethiopia. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted among 408 school adolescents in Bonga Town, southwest Ethiopia, from March 15, 2014 to May 25, 2014. An interviewer-administered questionnaire was used to collect sociodemographic and other data. A total of 7 mL of venous blood and 4 g of stool samples were collected from each study participant. Blood and stool samples were analyzed for hematological and parasitological analyses, respectively. Data were analyzed using SPSS Version 20 software for Windows. Results The overall prevalence of anemia was 15.2% (62/408), of which 83.9% comprised mild anemia. The proportion of microcytic, hypochromic anemia was 53% (33/62). Being female (adjusted odds ratio [AOR] =3.04, 95% confidence interval (CI) =1.41-6.57), household size ≥5 (AOR =2.58, 95% CI =1.11-5.96), father's illiteracy (AOR =9.03, 95% CI =4.29-18.87), intestinal parasitic infection (AOR =5.37, 95% CI =2.65-10.87), and low body mass index (AOR =2.54, 95% CI =1.17-5.51) were identified as determinants of anemia among school adolescents. Conclusion This study showed that anemia was a mild public health problem in this population. School-based interventions on identified associated factors are important to reduce the burden of anemia among school adolescents.

Anemia and iron deficiency among school adolescents: burden, severity, and determinant factors in southwest Ethiopia.

Iron-deficiency anaemia (IDA) is a common health problem in rural women and young children of Bangladesh. The university students usually take food from residential halls, and the food value of their diets is not always balanced. This cross-sectional study was conducted to estimate the prevalence of iron-deficiency anaemia among the university students of Noakhali region, Bangladesh. Haemoglobin level of 300 randomly-selected students was measured calorimetrically, using Sahli's haemoglobinometer during October to December 2011. Statistical analysis was done by using SPSS software for Windows (version 16) (SPSS Inc., Chicago, IL, USA). In the study, 55.3% students were found anaemic, of whom 36.7% were male, and 63.3% were female. Students aged 20-22 years were more anaemic (43.4%) than other age-groups. Majority (51.3%) of male students showed their haemoglobin level in the range of 13-15 g/dL, followed by 26.0% and 21.3% with 10-12 g/dL and 16-18 g/dL respectively. Although 50.5% anaemic and 51.1% non-anaemic female students showed normal BMI—lower percentage than anaemic (60.7%) and non-anaemic (71.9%) male students, the underweight students were found more anaemic than the overweight and obese subjects. Regular breakfast-taking habit showed significant (p=0.035, 95% CI 0.5-1.0) influence on IDA compared to non-regular breakfast takers. Consumption of meat, fish, poultry, eggs, or peanut butter regularly; junk food; multivitamins; and iron/iron-rich food showed insignificant (p=0.097, 95% CI 0.5-1.1; p=0.053, 95% CI 1.1-2.3; p=0.148, 95% CI 0.6-1.2; and p=0.487, 95% CI 0.7-1.4 respectively) role in provoking IDA. In the case of non-anaemic subjects, all of the above parameters were significant, except the junk food consumption (p=0.342, 95% CI 0.5-1.2). Our study revealed that majority of university students, especially female, were anaemic that might be aggravated by food habit and lack of awareness. The results suggest that anaemia can be prevented by providing proper knowledge on the healthful diet, improved lifestyle, and harmful effect of anaemia to the students.

Prevalence of Iron-Deficiency Anaemia among University Students in Noakhali Region, Bangladesh

Background Adolescence is characterized by rapid growth and development and iron requirements increase during this time. Adolescents with poor diet in early childhood and/or females with an early onset of menarche may be at greater risk for developing anemia due to the rapid depletion of iron stores in their bodies. Objective The objective of this study was to assess the prevalence and severity of anemia among school adolescents in Wonago district, Gedeo Zone, South Ethiopia. Methods A school based cross-sectional study was conducted among 443 randomly selected school adolescents across 15 schools (2 secondary schools and 13 primary schools) in the district. Hemoglobin concentration from a capillary blood sample was determined by portable hemoglobin meter (HemoCue). Descriptive statistics were computed for prevalence of anemia, anthropometric measurements, socio-economic and socio-demographic variables. A hierarchical multivariable logistic regression analysis was done to identify determinants of anemia among adolescents. Results The prevalence of anemia among adolescents in the study area was 22%. Anemia was higher among those in early adolescence period (10-13 years) (AOR: 4.75, CI: 1.69-13.35) compared to late adolescence (17-19 years) and among those with height for age z-score less than -2 (AOR: 6.23, CI: 1.98-19.62). Similarly, anemia was higher among those in households with a family size greater than five members (AOR: 9.82, CI: 2.42-39.88), adolescents from rural areas (AOR: 4.37, CI: 1.54-12.46) and families who purchase food needed for daily consumption (AOR: 3.25, CI: 1.42-7.45). On the other hand, adolescents from middle wealth quintiles (AOR: 0.26 (CI: 0.07-0.98)) and female adolescents (AOR: 0.34 (CI: 0.15-0.79) were less likely to be anemic in this study. Conclusions The prevalence of anemia in this population is of moderate public health concern, adolescents of both sexes are among groups at risk for the development of anemia. The need for further assessment of the etiology of anemia should be considered to design pragmatic intervention programs.

Anemia, a moderate public health concern among adolescents in South Ethiopia.

Anemia merupakan masalah gizi  yang paling utama di Indonesia. Anemia dapat disebabkan oleh penyakit infeksi, asupan zat gizi yang kurang, kehilangan darah (menstruasi) dan pengetahuan yang dimiliki. Remaja putri merupakan salah satu kelompok yang rawan menderita anemia. Tujuan penelitian ini untuk mengetahui pola makan dan  kejadian anemia gizi besi pada remaja putri di Kota Bengkulu. Metode penelitian kuantitatif dengan desain cross cectional. Populasi seluruh remaja putri SMP dan SMA di Kota Bengkulu, dengan sampel sebanyak 1200 remaja putri. Pengumpulan data dengan kuesioner dan pemeriksaan kadar Hemoglobin dengan  menggunakan metode cyanmethemoglobin. Analisis data menggunakan uji chi-square dengan tingkat kepercayaan 95%. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan prevalensi anemia pada remaja di Kota Bengkulu tahun 2013 sebesar 43% dan  pola makan  remaja tidak baik 79,2%,  Tidak terdapat hubungan antara pengetahuan tentang anemia dengan kejadian anemia dan tidak terdapat hubungan antara pola makan dengan kejadian anemia (p value > 0,05).  Diharapkan kepada  sekolah bersama puskesmas untuk memberikan pendidikan gizi/penyuluhan tentang gizi seimbang  pada remaja, kese hatan reproduksi, suplementasi gizi dan asam folat serta pengadaan kantin sekolah dalam pengembangan program pencegahan dan penanggulangan anemia sehingga remaja terhindar dari anemia. Analisis pola makan dan anemia gizi besi pada remaja putri kota bengkulu

Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence and risk factors of anemia among adolescents in Denizli where Mediterranean cuisine (fresh fruit and vegetables) is adopted Methods: We accepted hemoglobin values below 12 g/dl for girls and 13 g/ dl for boys as the criteria of anemia We recorded a detailed history including nutritional habits, consumption of animal source foods especially red meat, consumption of fresh fruit and vegetables, presence of parasitic infestation, psychosocial status, school success and any materials consumed except ordinary food Findings: We investigated the prevalence of anemia in 1120 children (672 girls and 448 boys), aged 12 to 16 years We found that the overall prevalence of anemia was 56% 83% of the girls and 16% of the boys were anemic We diagnosed iron deficiency anemia in 37(59%) anemic patients and combined iron deficiency and vitamin B12 deficiency anemia in 26 (41%) anemic patients None of the patients had folic acid deficiency Conclusion: Our results suggest that the socioeconomic status of the family, traditional eating habits of the region, the fear of gaining weight and irregular eating habits are of great importance in the development of adolescent anemia in Denizli

Prevalence and Risk Factors of Anemia among Adolescents in Denizli, Turkey.

The history of the studies on blood groups dates back to early 20th century. Today, more than 600 antigenic structure was detected among 29 blood groups. However, ABO and Rh antigenic structure were taken into consideration in transfusion medicine. To know the rates of the blood groups in a city really helps the citizens in need and blood bank employees. There isn’t any study on frequency of blood groups in Denizli. In this study, we aimed to find out the rates of ABO and Rh blood groups in Denizli province and provide new data to the literature. This study is fulfilled by evaluation of 64.840 people, who were applied to Denizli State Hospital for identification of blood groups between January 2005 and August 2009. Blood groups were examined by gel-centrifugation method. In our study, 58.292 (89.9%) people were found Rh positive and 6548 (10.1%) people were found Rh negative. The frequency of the blood groups A, O, B, AB were found in order as 42.6%, 33.3%,16.8%, 7.4% respectively. The rates of blood groups in Denizli are similar throughout Turkey and in city basis. We consider that this study, which is the first in our city, will contribute to the literature.

Objective: To determine the frequency of Helicobacter Pylori (HP) seroprevalence and infection in s Thalassemia major(TM) patients and to compare between s TM patients and controls both presenting with recurrent abdominal pain (RAP). Methodology: The study group included 62 TM and 41 healthy controls with RAP. Serum samples were examined for anti-HP antibody using an HPIgG ELISA. Urea-breath test was applied to patients with positive HPIgG by using 14 C. In 36 of TM patients (58.1%) and 20 of healthy children (48.8%) HPIgG (+) was stated. Results: In terms of HPIgG frequency, no difference was found between TM and control groups (p=0.354). The Urea-breath test given to the TM patients and healthy children with HPIgG (+), test in 30 TM patient (48.4%) and 16 healthy children (39%) the Urea-breath test was found to be positive (p=0.34). With Urea-breath test of TM patients, statistically a significant relationships were found between ALT level, epigastric pain, periumbilical pain, splenectomy and age (respectively p=0.02, p=0.03, p=0.00, p=0.01). Conclusion: Helicobacter Pylori in our developing country may be one of the causes of RAP in TM patients as well as healthy children.
