In this article, we present a small, complete, and efficient SAT-solver in the style of conflict-driven learning, as exemplified by Chaff. We aim to give sufficient details about implementation to enable the reader to construct his or her own solver in a very short time.This will allow users of SAT-solvers to make domain specific extensions or adaptions of current state-of-the-art SAT-techniques, to meet the needs of a particular application area. The presented solver is designed with this in mind, and includes among other things a mechanism for adding arbitrary boolean constraints. It also supports solving a series of related SAT-problems efficiently by an incremental SAT-interface.

An Extensible SAT-solver

The promise of quantum computers is that certain computational tasks might be executed exponentially faster on a quantum processor than on a classical processor1. A fundamental challenge is to build a high-fidelity processor capable of running quantum algorithms in an exponentially large computational space. Here we report the use of a processor with programmable superconducting qubits2-7 to create quantum states on 53 qubits, corresponding to a computational state-space of dimension 253 (about 1016). Measurements from repeated experiments sample the resulting probability distribution, which we verify using classical simulations. Our Sycamore processor takes about 200 seconds to sample one instance of a quantum circuit a million times-our benchmarks currently indicate that the equivalent task for a state-of-the-art classical supercomputer would take approximately 10,000 years. This dramatic increase in speed compared to all known classical algorithms is an experimental realization of quantum supremacy8-14 for this specific computational task, heralding a much-anticipated computing paradigm.

The objective of this paper is to give a comprehensive introduction to applied cryptography with an engineer or computer scientist in mind. The emphasis is on the knowledge needed to create practical systems which supports integrity, confidentiality, or authenticity. Topics covered includes an introduction to the concepts in cryptography, attacks against cryptographic systems, key use and handling, random bit generation, encryption modes, and message authentication codes. Recommendations on algorithms and further reading is given in the end of the paper. This paper should make the reader able to build, understand and evaluate system descriptions and designs based on the cryptographic components described in the paper.

Simulating quantum computation on a classical computer is a difficult problem. The matrices representing quantum gates, and the vectors modeling qubit states grow exponentially with an increase in the number of qubits. However, by using a novel data structure called the Quantum Information Decision Diagram (QuIDD) that exploits the structure of quantum operators, a useful subset of operator matrices and state vectors can be represented in a form that grows polynomially with the number of qubits. This subset contains, but is not limited to, any equal superposition of n qubits, any computational basis state, n-qubit Pauli matrices, and n-qubit Hadamard matrices. It does not, however, contain the discrete Fourier transform (employed in Shor's algorithm) and some oracles used in Grover's algorithm. We first introduce and motivate decision diagrams and QuIDDs. We then analyze the runtime and memory complexity of QuIDD operations. Finally, we empirically validate QuIDD-based simulation by means of a general-purpose quantum computing simulator QuIDDPro implemented in C++. We simulate various instances of Grover's algorithm with QuIDDPro, and the results demonstrate that QuIDDs asymptotically outperform all other known simulation techniques. Our simulations also show that well-known worst-case instances of classical searching can be circumvented in many specific cases by data compression techniques.

Improving Gate-Level Simulation of Quantum Circuits

Invers is a fast incremental-verification system for physical-synthesis optimization that includes capabilities for error detection, diagnosis, and visualization. Using a new metric called the similarity factor, Invers can help engineers identify potential errors earlier in development. Invers employs traditional verification only when necessary to ensure completeness of the verification flow. It also provides an error visualization interface to simplify error isolation and correction.

Improving QuIDD-based Simulation

GCD computations and variants of the Euclidean algorithm enjoy broad uses in both classical and quantum algorithms. In this paper, we propose quantum circuits for GCD computation with $O(n \log n)$ depth with O(n) ancillae. Prior circuit construction needs $O(n^2)$ running time with O(n) ancillae. The proposed construction is based on the binary GCD algorithm and it benefits from log-depth circuits for 1-bit shift, comparison/subtraction, and managing ancillae. The worst-case gate count remains $O(n^2)$, as in traditional circuits.

Quantum Circuits for GCD Computation with $O(n \log n)$ Depth and O(n) Ancillae

We study leading-edge local search heuristics for balanced hypergraph partitioning and Boolean satisfiability, intending the generalization of such heuristics beyond their original domains. We adapt the Fiduccia Mattheyses (FM) hypergraph partitioning heuristic to Boolean Satisfiability (SAT), and the WalkSAT SAT solver to hypergraph partitioning. Focusing on balanced hypergraph partitioning, we propose a combination of the classical FM heuristic and our "cross-over" heuristic WalkPart, and empirically show that it is more powerful than each component alone. Empirically, we show a 15% improvement in net cut and a 7% improvement in runtime over a leading-edge implementation of the FM heuristic.
