Journal ArticleDOI
Pathogen-specific burdens of community diarrhoea in developing countries: a multisite birth cohort study (MAL-ED).
James A Platts-Mills,Sudhir Babji,Ladaporn Bodhidatta,Jean Gratz,Jean Gratz,Rashidul Haque,Alexandre Havt,Benjamin J.J. McCormick,Monica McGrath,Maribel Paredes Olortegui,Amidou Samie,Sadia Shakoor,Dinesh Mondal,Ila Fn Lima,Dinesh Hariraju,Bishnu Bahadur Rayamajhi,Shahida Qureshi,Furqan Kabir,Pablo Peñataro Yori,Brenda Mufamadi,Caroline Amour,J. Daniel Carreon,Stephanie A. Richard,Dennis Lang,Pascal O. Bessong,Esto Mduma,Tahmeed Ahmed,Aldo A. M. Lima,Carl J. Mason,Anita K. M. Zaidi,Zulfiqar A Bhutta,Margaret Kosek,Richard L. Guerrant,Michael Gottlieb,Mark A. Miller,Gagandeep Kang,Eric R. Houpt +36 more
TL;DR: The findings suggest that although single-pathogen strategies have an important role in the reduction of the burden of severe diarrhoea disease, the effect of such interventions on total diarrhoeal incidence at the community level might be limited.
Journal ArticleDOI
Prevalence and virulence gene profiling of enteroaggregative Escherichia coli in malnourished and nourished Brazilian children.
Alexandre Havt,Ila Fn Lima,Pedro Hqs Medeiros,Marco A F Clementino,Ana K. S. Santos,Marília S. M. G. Amaral,Herlice N. Veras,Mara Mg Prata,Noélia L. Lima,Alessandra Di Moura,Álvaro M. Leite,Alberto M. Soares,José Q. Filho,Eric R. Houpt,James P. Nataro,Richard L. Guerrant,Richard L. Guerrant,Aldo Am Lima,Aldo Am Lima +18 more
TL;DR: The data reinforce the EAEC impact on malnutrition, the importance of aar as negative regulator and the great contribution of AAF/II fimbria for the pathobiology of EAEC.
Journal ArticleDOI
Seasonality and within-subject clustering of rotavirus infections in an eight-site birth cohort study
Josh M. Colston,A. M. S. Ahmed,Sajid Bashir Soofi,Erling Svensen,Rashidul Haque,Jasmin Shrestha,Rosemary Nshama,Zulfigar A. Bhutta,Ila Fn Lima,Amidou Samie,Ladaporn Bodhidatta,Aldo A. M. Lima,Pascal O. Bessong,M. Paredes Olortegui,Ali Turab,V. R. Mohan,Lawrence H. Moulton,Elena N. Naumova,Gagandeep Kang,Margaret Kosek +19 more
TL;DR: Characterising rotavirus seasonality in eight different locations while adjusting for age, calendar time and within-subject clustering of episodes by applying an adapted Serfling model approach to data from a multi-site cohort study shows patterns that are broadly congruent with several emerging hypotheses about rotav virus transmission.
Journal ArticleDOI
Intestinal cell migration damage induced by enteropathogenic Escherichia coli strains
Paloma A. Cavalcante,Mara M. G. Prata,Pedro H. Q. S. Medeiros,Alves da Silva,Josiane da Silva Quetz,M.A.V. Reyes,Tigressa Helena Soares Rodrigues,Ana Karolina S. Santos,Samilly A. Ribeiro,Herlice N. Veras,Bona,Marília S. M. G. Amaral,Francisco Adelvane de Paulo Rodrigues,Ila Fn Lima,Alexandre Havt,A.A.M. Lima +15 more
TL;DR: Overall, EPEC E2348/69 reduced migration and increased apoptosis and necrosis levels compared to EPEC LDI001 and E. coli HS strains, while the T3SS-deficient strain did not demonstrate this activation.
