TL;DR: In this paper, a non-invasive approach using portable X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy is proposed for characterizing prehistoric cave art by a noninvasive method using a set of mock-ups made of a calcareous substrate and natural manganese oxide minerals likely to be found in the cave art.
