Journal ArticleDOI
The clinical value of regular thyroid function tests during amiodarone treatment
Stan Benjamens,Robin P. F. Dullaart,Wim J. Sluiter,Michiel Rienstra,Isabelle C. Van Gelder,Thera P. Links +5 more
TL;DR: Data is provided to reconsider the yield of regular testing of thyroid function to predict overt thyroid dysfunction in amiodarone treated patients to help clarify the value of long-term regular monitoring for thyroid dysfunction.
Journal ArticleDOI
Stroke type and severity in patients with subclinical atrial fibrillation: An analysis from the Asymptomatic Atrial Fibrillation and Stroke Evaluation in Pacemaker Patients and the Atrial Fibrillation Reduction Atrial Pacing Trial (ASSERT)
Kanjana S Perera,Mukul Sharma,Stuart J. Connolly,Jia Wang,Michael R. Gold,Stefan H. Hohnloser,Chu-Pak Lau,Isabelle C. Van Gelder,Carlos A. Morillo,Alessandro Capucci,Carsten W. Israel,Gluca Botto,Jeffery S. Healey +12 more
TL;DR: In patients with SCAF and stroke, SCAF seems probably causal in many cases; however, in more than 40%, it seems to be acting only as a risk marker.
Journal ArticleDOI
Beat shock proteins and atrial fibrillation.
TL;DR: Both correlative studies in human and experimental studies suggest that Hsp27 (HspB1) may delay progression of AF to the more permanent forms and hence HSp27 might be referred to as a “Beat shock protein”.
Journal ArticleDOI
Sex-related differences in risk factors, outcome, and quality of life in patients with permanent atrial fibrillation: results from the RACE II study
Mariëlle Kloosterman,Harry J.G.M. Crijns,Bart A. Mulder,Hessel F. Groenveld,Dirk J. van Veldhuisen,Michiel Rienstra,Isabelle C. Van Gelder +6 more
TL;DR: In this permanent AF population, women had more accumulation of AF risk factors than men and QoL was negatively influenced by the higher number of risk factors in women, suggesting that sex differences may be driven by the greater risk factor burden in women.
Journal ArticleDOI
Atrial fibrillation: villain or bystander in vascular brain injury.
TL;DR: A changed conceptual model with less focus on the arrhythmia, and more on atrial substrate/cardiomyopathy causing VBI both in the presence or absence of AF, is required to allow us to better prevent AF-related VBI.
