Electrochemical capacitors, also called supercapacitors, store energy using either ion adsorption (electrochemical double layer capacitors) or fast surface redox reactions (pseudo-capacitors). They can complement or replace batteries in electrical energy storage and harvesting applications, when high power delivery or uptake is needed. A notable improvement in performance has been achieved through recent advances in understanding charge storage mechanisms and the development of advanced nanostructured materials. The discovery that ion desolvation occurs in pores smaller than the solvated ions has led to higher capacitance for electrochemical double layer capacitors using carbon electrodes with subnanometre pores, and opened the door to designing high-energy density devices using a variety of electrolytes. Combination of pseudo-capacitive nanomaterials, including oxides, nitrides and polymers, with the latest generation of nanostructured lithium electrodes has brought the energy density of electrochemical capacitors closer to that of batteries. The use of carbon nanotubes has further advanced micro-electrochemical capacitors, enabling flexible and adaptable devices to be made. Mathematical modelling and simulation will be the key to success in designing tomorrow's high-energy and high-power devices.

Materials for electrochemical capacitors

Catalysts for oxygen reduction and evolution reactions are at the heart of key renewable-energy technologies including fuel cells and water splitting. Despite tremendous efforts, developing oxygen electrode catalysts with high activity at low cost remains a great challenge. Here, we report a hybrid material consisting of Co₃O₄ nanocrystals grown on reduced graphene oxide as a high-performance bi-functional catalyst for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Although Co₃O₄ or graphene oxide alone has little catalytic activity, their hybrid exhibits an unexpected, surprisingly high ORR activity that is further enhanced by nitrogen doping of graphene. The Co₃O₄/N-doped graphene hybrid exhibits similar catalytic activity but superior stability to Pt in alkaline solutions. The same hybrid is also highly active for OER, making it a high-performance non-precious metal-based bi-catalyst for both ORR and OER. The unusual catalytic activity arises from synergetic chemical coupling effects between Co₃O₄ and graphene.

Functionalization of Graphene: Covalent and Non-Covalent Approaches, Derivatives and Applications

Nitrogen doping has been an effective way to tailor the properties of graphene and render its potential use for various applications. Three common bonding configurations are normally obtained when doping nitrogen into the graphene: pyridinic N, pyrrolic N, and graphitic N. This paper reviews nitrogen-doped graphene, including various synthesis methods to introduce N doping and various characterization techniques for the examination of various N bonding configurations. Potential applications of N-graphene are also reviewed on the basis of experimental and theoretical studies.

Review on Recent Progress in Nitrogen-Doped Graphene: Synthesis, Characterization, and Its Potential Applications

Nitrogen-doped graphene sheets were prepared through a hydrothermal reduction of colloidal dispersions of graphite oxide in the presence of hydrazine and ammonia at pH of 10. The effect of hydrothermal temperature on the structure, morphology, and surface chemistry of as-prepared graphene sheets were investigated though XRD, N2 adsorption, solid-state 13C NMR, SEM, TEM, and XPS characterizations. Oxygen reduction and nitrogen doping were achieved simultaneously under the hydrothermal reaction. Up to 5% nitrogen-doped graphene sheets with slightly wrinkled and folded feature were obtained at the relative low hydrothermal temperature. With the increase of hydrothermal temperature, the nitrogen content decreased slightly and more pyridinic N incorporated into the graphene network. Meanwhile, a jellyfish-like graphene structure was formed by self-organization of graphene sheets at the hydrothermal temperature of 160 °C. Preparation of nitrogen-doped graphene sheets by a combined chemical and hydrothermal reduction of graphene oxide.

The hydrodesulfurization (HDS) of a diesel oil was carried out in a batch autoclave reactor over the temperature range 280-420 o C for 0-90 min under a total pressure of 2.9 MPa, using CoMo and NiMo catalysts in both one and two stages. The HDS reactivities of benzothiophenes, dibenzothiophenes (DBTs), and their alkylated homologes existing in the diesel fuel were examined in detail by means of respective quantitative analyses. The sulfur compounds can be classified into four groups according to their HDS reactivities which were described by their pseudo-first-order rate constants. Present State of the Art and Future Challenges in the Hydrodesulfurization of Polyaromatic Sulfur Compounds

A hierarchical N-doped carbon nanotube-graphene hybrid nanostructure (NCNT-GHN), in which the graphene layers are distributed inside the CNT inner cavities, was designed to efficiently support noble metal (e.g., PtRu) nanoparticles. Well-dispersed PtRu nanoparticles with diameters of 2–4 nm were immobilized onto these NCNT-GHN supports by a low-temperature chemical reduction method without any pretreatment. Compared to conventional CNTs and commercial catalysts. a much better catalytic performance was achieved by a synergistic effect of the hierarchical structure (graphene-CNT hybrid) and electronic modulation (N-doping) during the methanol electrooxidation reaction. Improved single-cell performances with long-term stability are also demonstrated using NCNT-GHN as catalyst support.
