Journal ArticleDOI

Nutrient limitation on terrestrial plant growth--modeling the interaction between nitrogen and phosphorus.

TL;DR: This work uses a simple model of plant growth and nutrient uptake to explore the consequences for the plant's relative growth rate of letting plants invest differentially in N and P uptake and finds a smooth transition between limiting elements.
Journal ArticleDOI

Temperature sensitivity and substrate quality in soil organic matter decomposition: results of an incubation study with three substrates

TL;DR: In this paper, the temperature sensitivity of decomposition of soil organic matter should increase with increasing recalcitrance, and this hypothesis was tested in a laboratory experiment with wheat straw, spruce needle litter and mor humus.
Journal ArticleDOI

What determines the temperature response of soil organic matter decomposition

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors used a simple, analytical model to investigate how three different mechanisms (i) the rate at which decomposers take up substrate at their surface, (ii), the rate by which substrate diffuses up to the surface of the decomposer, and (iii) the surface availability of substrate is made available in the environment interact to determine the temperature response.
Journal ArticleDOI

Drying/rewetting cycles mobilize old C from deep soils from a California annual grassland

TL;DR: In this article, the authors measured the 14C and 13C signatures of CO2 respired from surface and deep soils released through multiple dry/rewetting cycles in laboratory incubations.
