Morphological structure and optical properties of the wings of Morphidae
TL;DR: In this paper, the morphological structure and optical properties of the wings of 14 species of Morphidae have been investigated, including Lepidoptera, and two types of optical measurement were performed on the iridescent wings: spectroscopic measurements under various incidences and gonioscopic measurements for a given incidence angle and wavelength.
Journal ArticleDOI
Multiscaled polarization effects in Suneve coronata (Lepidoptera) and other insects: application to anti-counterfeiting of banknotes
TL;DR: The scales of many Lepidoptera and the elytra of quite a number of Coleoptera possess specialized micro-and nano-structures that produce special polarization effects as discussed by the authors.
Journal ArticleDOI
Physical colors in cultural heritage: Surface plasmons in glass
TL;DR: Lafait et al. as mentioned in this paper applied the principle of plasmons in detail to Gold ruby glass and luster ceramics in more detail due to the complexity of the effects involved: plasmon, scattering, interference between specular reflected light beams and also between scattered beams.
Journal ArticleDOI
Structural origin of the green iridescence on the chelicerae of the red-backed jumping spider, Phidippus johnsoni (Salticidae: Araneae).
A. L. Ingram,Olivier Deparis,J. Boulenguez,G. Kennaway,Serge Berthier,Andrew R. Parker,Andrew R. Parker +6 more
TL;DR: The green iridescent chelicerae of the red-backed jumping spider, Phidippus johnsoni, are investigated, revealing a stack of 86 layers of alternating low and high density materials, identified as air and chitin respectively, suggesting that the stack functions as a multilayer reflector for green.
Journal ArticleDOI
Modeling the vivid white color of the beetle Calothyrza margaritifera
Jacques Lafait,Chantal Andraud,Serge Berthier,J. Boulenguez,P. Callet,S. Dumazet,Marie Rassart,Jean-Pol Vigneron +7 more
TL;DR: In this article, a multiscale optical model was developed for predicting the optical properties of the elytra of the longhorn Calothyrza margaritifera by using the Mie theory and solving the Radiative Transfer Equation.
