Exploring Chemical, Mechanical, and Electrical Functionalities of Binders for Advanced Energy-Storage Devices

The current status of research and development in Fe-based bulk metallic glasses (BMGs) is reviewed. Bulk metallic glasses are relatively new materials possessing a glassy structure and large section thickness. These materials have an exciting combination of properties such as high mechanical strength, good thermal stability, large supercooled liquid region and potential for easy forming. Ever since the first synthesis of an Fe-based BMG in an Fe–Al–Ga–P–C–B system in 1995, there has been intense activity on the synthesis and characterisation of Fe-based BMGs. These BMGs exhibit some unique characteristics which have not been obtained in conventional Fe-based crystalline alloys. This uniqueness has led to practical uses of these bulk glassy alloys as soft magnetic and structural materials. This paper reviews the current understanding of the mechanisms of stress corrosion cracking of pipeline steels. The similarities, the differences and the influencing factors are considered for the “high pH” stress corrosion cracking caused by a concentrated bicarbonate-carbonate solution, and for the “low pH” stress corrosion cracking due to a diluter solution. For high pH stress corrosion cracking, it is well accepted that the mechanism involves anodic dissolution for crack initiation and propagation. In contrast, it has been suggested that the low pH stress corrosion cracking is associated with the dissolution of the crack tip and sides, accompanied by the ingress of hydrogen into the pipeline steel. But the precise influence of hydrogen on the mechanism needs to be further studied.

Review of stress corrosion cracking of pipeline steels in "low" and "high" pH solutions

This paper presents a design flexible, innovative strategy that can be used for the development, restoration and/or repairing of neutron shielding products in the near future. Cold spray additive manufacturing technique was employed to deposit a 6 mm thick neutron shielding B4C/Al composite coating on a 6061-T6 cylindrical substrate. Microstructure, mechanical behavior and neutron shielding performance of the free standing coating were investigated at different heat treatment conditions in the order: 200, 300, 400 and 500 °C. Microstructure evolutions were characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), electron backscattered diffraction (EBSD), laser confocal scanning microscopy (LSM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) techniques, while mechanical properties were investigated via tensile and hardness tests. It was revealed that due to the presence of large amount of inter-splats' defects and intensive cold working, the as-deposited coating exhibited poor strength and fractured in a brittle manner. Moreover, as the heat treatment temperature was increased, the coating gradually recovered the ductility and gained strength due to progressive bonding/healing of inter-splat boundaries through recovery and recrystallization mechanisms. The coating heat-treated at 500 °C displayed maximum ductility (1.4%) and strength (60 MPa) with minimum porosity level of 1.9%. Neutron shielding results showed attenuation of thermal neutrons with increasing sample thickness. Neutron shielding results also displayed a slight improvement in the neutron shielding performance of the sample heat-treated at 500 °C.

Characterizations of the microstructure and mechanical property of the fusion boundary region of an Alloy 182-A533B low alloy steel (LAS) dissimilar weld joint were conducted The existence of type-II boundary that parallels to the fusion boundary in the dilution zone (DZ) of Alloy 182 within a distance of about 50 μm was observed The chemical composition transition was found in the narrow zone between the type-II and the fusion boundaries Highest hardness was also found in this narrow zone in the fusion boundary region, implying a high residual strain level in the narrow zone Lath martensite was observed in both sides of the type-II boundary in DZ, suggesting the localized enrichment of Fe and C adjacent to the type-II boundary due to the diffusion from LAS to DZ Massive precipitations of carbides were observed on the type-II boundary but not on the fusion boundary In addition, the orientation relationship at the fusion boundary between the lath martensite in the heat-affected zone in LAS and the austenite in the DZ was found to be Bain, K–S and N–W relationships
