Towards a new synthesis of evolutionary relationships and classification of scleractinia

TL;DR: A more reliable and comprehensive scheme of evolutionary relationships and classification framework for the Scleractinia will require close cooperation between coral biologists, ecologist, geologists, geochemists, geochemistryists, and paleontologists.

INVITED: Discovery of a Cretaceous scleractinian coral with a calcitic skeleton

TL;DR: It is shown that a well-preserved fossil coral from the Upper Cretaceous has preserved skeletal structural features identical to those observed in present-day scleractinians, which implies that corals, like other groups of marine, calcium carbonate–producing organisms, can form skeletons of different carbonate polymorphs.
Journal ArticleDOI

Study of the crystallographic architecture of corals at the nanoscale by scanning transmission X-ray microscopy and transmission electron microscopy.

TL;DR: The present study illustrates how the methodology described here, which combines HRTEM and polarization-dependent synchrotron-based STXM imaging, offers an interesting new approach for investigating biomineralizing systems at the nm-scale.
Journal ArticleDOI

Triassic roots of the amphiastraeid scleractinian corals

TL;DR: This study is the first attempt to analyze the relationships of the Triassic corals cladistically and supports grouping the Zardinophyllidae with the Amphiastraeidae in the clade Pachythecaliina (synapomorphy: presence of pachytheca).
