Polarimetry has a long and successful history in various forms of clear media. Driven by their biomedical potential, the use of the polarimetric approaches for biological tissue assessment has also recently received considerable attention. Specifically, polarization can be used as an effective tool to discriminate against multiply scattered light (acting as a gating mechanism) in order to enhance contrast and to improve tissue imaging resolution. Moreover, the intrinsic tissue polarimetry characteristics contain a wealth of morphological and functional information of potential biomedical importance. However, in a complex random medium-like tissue, numerous complexities due to multiple scattering and simultaneous occurrences of many scattering and polarization events present formidable challenges both in terms of accurate measurements and in terms of analysis of the tissue polarimetry signal. In order to realize the potential of the polarimetric approaches for tissue imaging and characterization/diagnosis, a number of researchers are thus pursuing innovative solutions to these challenges. In this review paper, we summarize these and other issues pertinent to the polarized light methodologies in tissues. Specifically, we discuss polarized light basics, Stokes-Muller formalism, methods of polarization measurements, polarized light modeling in turbid media, applications to tissue imaging, inverse analysis for polarimetric results quantification, applications to quantitative tissue assessment, etc.

Tissue polarimetry: concepts, challenges, applications, and outlook

An objective analysis is carried out of the matricial models representing the polarimetric properties of light and material media leading to the identification and definition of their corresponding physical quantities, using the concept of the coherency matrix. For light, cases of homogeneous and inhomogeneous wavefront are analyzed, and a model for 3D polarimetric purity is constructed. For linear passive material media, a general model is developed on the basis that any physically realizable linear transformation of Stokes vectors is equivalent to an ensemble average of passive, deterministic nondepolarizing transformations. Through this framework, the relevant physical quantities, including indices of polarimetric purity, are identified and decoupled. Some decompositions of the whole system into a set of well-defined components are considered, as well as techniques for isolating the unknown components by means of new procedures for subtracting coherency matrices. These results and methods constitute a powerful tool for analyzing and exploiting experimental and industrial polarimetry. Some particular application examples are indicated.

Polarimetric characterization of light and media - Physical quantities involved in polarimetric phenomena

Utilization of Mueller matrix formalism to obtain optical targets depolarization and polarization properties

A novel chaotic lidar (CLIDAR) system that utilizes a chaotic laser as the light source is proposed and studied. In CLIDAR, the detection and ranging are realized by correlating the signal waveform reflected back from the target with a delayed reference waveform. Benefiting from the very broad bandwidth of the chaotic waveform that can be easily generated by a semiconductor laser, a centimeter-range resolution is readily achieved. The correlation performance of CLIDAR is studied both numerically and experimentally. The power spectra, phase portraits, time series, and correlation traces of the chaotic waveforms obtained at different operating conditions are compared. The relation between the complexity of the attractor and the correlation property is examined. The correlation dimension and the largest positive Lyapunov exponent of each waveform are calculated. To compare the correlation performance of the waveforms quantitatively, peak sidelobe levels of the correlation traces with different correlation lengths and relative noise levels are investigated. Preliminary experiments show a subcentimeter accuracy in ranging with a 3-cm-range resolution, which currently is limited by the bandwidth of the oscilloscope used.

Chaotic lidar

Polarization is a fundamental property of light and a powerful sensing tool that has been applied to many areas. A Mueller matrix is a complete mathematical description of the polarization characteristics of objects that interact with light, and is known as a transfer function of Stokes vectors which characterise the state of polarization of light. Mueller polarimetric imaging measures Mueller matrices over a field of view and thus allows for visualising the polarization characteristics of the objects. It has emerged as a promising technique in recent years for tissue imaging, improving image contrast and providing a unique perspective to reveal additional information that cannot be resolved by other optical imaging modalities. This review introduces the basis of the Stokes-Mueller formulism, interpretation methods of Mueller matrices into fundamental polarization properties, polarization properties of biological tissues, and considerations in the construction of Mueller polarimetric imaging devices for surgical and diagnostic applications, including primary configurations, optimization procedures, calibration methods as well as the instrument polarization properties of several widely-used biomedical optical devices. The paper also reviews recent progress in Mueller polarimetric endoscopes and fibre Mueller polarimeters, followed by the future outlook in applying the technique to surgery and diagnostics. Tissue polarization properties convey morphological, micro-structural and compositional information of tissue with great potential for label free characterization of tissue pathological changes. Recent progress in tissue polarimetric imaging and polarization resolved endoscopy paved the way for translation of polarimetric imaging to surgery and tissue diagnosis.

Mueller polarimetric imaging for surgical and diagnostic applications: a review

We present a new, to the best of our knowledge, experimental configuration of Mueller matrix polarimeter based on wavelength polarization coding. This is a compact and fast technique to study polarization phenomena. Our theoretical approach, the necessity to correct systematic errors and our experimental results are presented. The feasibility of the technique is tested on vacuum and on a linear polarizer.

In underwater optical imaging using pulsed laser radiation the vector nature of the electromagnetic wave can be used to produce polarization contrast. We have analyzed different polarimetric transformations of light pulses through seawater on immersed targets and defined optimum conditions for using polarization parameters.

Polarization effects of seawater and underwater targets.

The temporal frequency response of water supplemented with scattering particles was deduced from the measurement of the optical backscattering of a short (100 ps) blue-green (532 nm) optical pulse given by a frequency-doubled Nd:YAG laser. Indeed, this backscattering measurement gave the water impulse response from which the transfer function was computed by taking the power spectrum. This backscattering frequency response had a low-pass filter-like response which enabled us to estimate the medium cut-off frequency. As the backscattered signal shape depends on the value of the water attenuation coefficient, the ocean water cut-off frequency varies with the amount of scattering particles its contains. The aim was to define the variations of the cut-off frequency as a function of the attenuation coefficient.

Determination of sea-water cut-off frequency by backscattering transfer function measurement

We report on a new method based on speckle size analysis and devoted to particle aggregation measurements. The experimental measurements give the speckle size variation during a salt aggregation process of polystyrene microspheres. The measurements are taken at a fixed monomer concentration, varying the salt concentration. Moreover, we applied this technique to follow blood platelet aggregation, usually monitored with a visible light transmittance photometer (aggregometer). Aggregation process was induced by ADP (adenosine diphosphate) addition, then we measured the speckle size variation versus time at two different ADP concentrations.
