: The unpolarized absorption and circular dichroism spectra of the fundamental vibrational transitions of the chiral molecule, 4-methyl-2-oxetanone, are calculated ab initio. Harmonic force fields are obtained using Density Functional Theory (DFT), MP2, and SCF methodologies and a 5S4P2D/3S2P (TZ2P) basis set. DFT calculations use the Local Spin Density Approximation (LSDA), BLYP, and Becke3LYP (B3LYP) density functionals. Mid-IR spectra predicted using LSDA, BLYP, and B3LYP force fields are of significantly different quality, the B3LYP force field yielding spectra in clearly superior, and overall excellent, agreement with experiment. The MP2 force field yields spectra in slightly worse agreement with experiment than the B3LYP force field. The SCF force field yields spectra in poor agreement with experiment.The basis set dependence of B3LYP force fields is also explored: the 6-31G* and TZ2P basis sets give very similar results while the 3-21G basis set yields spectra in substantially worse agreements with experiment. jg

Ab initio calculation of vibrational absorption and circular dichroism spectra using density functional force fields

Atropisomerism is a stereochemical behavior portrayed by three-dimensional molecules that bear rotationally restricted σ bond. Akin to the well-represented point-chiral molecules, atropisomerically chiral compounds are finding increasing utilities in many disciplines where molecular asymmetry is influential. This provides steady demand on atroposelective synthesis, where numerous synthetic pursuits have been rewarded with conceptually novel and streamlined methods while expanding the structural diversity of atropisomers. This review summarizes key achievements in stereoselective preparation of biaryl, heterobiaryl, and nonbiaryl atropisomers documented between 2015 and 2020. Emphasis is placed on the synthetic strategies for each structural class, while examples are cited to illustrate the potential applications of the accessed atropochiral targets.

Recent Advances in Catalytic Asymmetric Construction of Atropisomers.

Atroposelective synthesis of axially chiral biaryls by palladium-catalyzed C−H olefination, using tert-leucine as an inexpensive, catalytic, and transient chiral auxiliary, has been realized. This strategy provides a highly efficient and straightforward access to a broad range of enantioenriched biaryls in good yields (up to 98 %) with excellent enantioselectivities (95 to >99 % ee). Kinetic resolution of trisubstituted biaryls bearing sterically more demanding substituents is also operative, thus furnishing the optically active olefinated products with excellent selectivity (95 to >99 % ee, s-factor up to 600).

Recent advances in the synthesis of axially chiral biaryls via transition metal-catalysed asymmetric C–H functionalization

Cyclopentadienyl (Cp) ligands enable efficient steering of various transition-metal-catalyzed transformations, in particular enantioselective C−H activation. Currently only few chiral Cp ligands are available. Therefore, a conceptually general approach to chiral Cp ligand discovery would be invaluable as it would enable the discovery of applicable Cp ligands and to efficiently and rapidly vary and tune their structures. Herein, we describe the three-step gram-scale synthesis of a structurally diverse and widely applicable chiral Cp ligand collection (JasCp ligands) with highly variable and adjustable structures. Their modular nature and their amenability to rapid structure variation enabled the efficient discovery of ligands for three enantioselective RhIII-catalyzed C−H activation reactions, including one unprecedented transformation. This novel approach should enable the discovery of efficient chiral Cp ligands for various further enantioselective transformations.

A twist of nature--the significance of atropisomers in biological systems.

The deprotection of chiral 1,2-bis(tosylamides) to their corresponding 1,2-diamines is mostly unsuccessful under standard conditions. In a new methodology, the use of Mg/MeOH with sufficient steric additions allows the facile synthesis of 1,2-diamines in 78-98% yields. These results are rationalized using density functional theory and the examination of inner and outer-sphere reduction mechanisms.
