Influence of Acellular Natural Lung Matrix on Murine Embryonic Stem Cell Differentiation and Tissue Formation
Joaquin Cortiella,Jean A. Niles,Andrea V. Cantú,Andrea Brettler,Anthony Pham,Gracie Vargas,Sean Winston,Jennifer M Wang,Shannon Walls,Joan E. Nichols +9 more
TL;DR: It is found that AC lung allowed for better retention of cells with more differentiation of mESCs into epithelial and endothelial lineages and highlights the critical role played by matrix or scaffold-associated cues in guiding ESC differentiation toward lung-specific lineages.
Journal ArticleDOI
Tissue-engineered lung: an in vivo and in vitro comparison of polyglycolic acid and pluronic F-127 hydrogel/somatic lung progenitor cell constructs to support tissue growth.
Joaquin Cortiella,Joan E. Nichols,Koji Kojima,Lawrence J. Bonassar,Phong Dargon,Amit K. Roy,Martin P. Vacant,Jean A. Niles,Charles A. Vacanti +8 more
TL;DR: The isolation and characterization of a population of adult-derived or somatic lung progenitor cells from adult mammalian lung tissue and the promotion of alveolar tissue growth by these cells (both in vitro and in vivo) after seeding onto synthetic polymer scaffolds are described.
Journal ArticleDOI
Production and assessment of decellularized pig and human lung scaffolds.
Joan E. Nichols,Jean A. Niles,Michael Riddle,Gracie Vargas,Tuya Schilagard,Liang Ma,Kert Edward,Saverio La Francesca,Jason Sakamoto,Stephanie P. Vega,Marie Ogadegbe,Ronald P. Mlcak,Donald J. Deyo,Lee C. Woodson,Christopher K. McQuitty,Scott D. Lick,Daniel L. Beckles,Esther Melo,Joaquin Cortiella +18 more
TL;DR: Examination of scaffolds produced using a variety of detergents indicated that detergent choice influenced human immune response in terms of T cell activation and chemokine production.
Journal ArticleDOI
In vitro analog of human bone marrow from 3D scaffolds with biomimetic inverted colloidal crystal geometry.
Joan E. Nichols,Joaquin Cortiella,Jungwoo Lee,Jean A. Niles,Meghan J. Cuddihy,Shaopeng Wang,Joseph Bielitzki,Andrea V. Cantú,Ron Mlcak,Esther Valdivia,Ryan Yancy,Matthew L. McClure,Nicholas A. Kotov +12 more
TL;DR: The development of an in vitro artificial bone marrow based on a 3D scaffold with inverted colloidal crystal (ICC) geometry mimicking the structural topology of actual bone marrow matrix being shown to be critical for production of B cells and antigen-specific antibodies is reported.
Journal ArticleDOI
Human Lymphocyte Apoptosis after Exposure to Influenza A Virus
TL;DR: The present studies showed that Fas-FasL signaling plays a major role in the induction of apoptosis in lymphocytes after exposure to IAV, which likely represents a part of an overall beneficial immune response but could be a possible mechanism of disease pathogenesis.
