Exercise training increases size of hippocampus and improves memory
Kirk I. Erickson,Michelle W. Voss,Ruchika Shaurya Prakash,Chandramallika Basak,Amanda N. Szabo,Laura Chaddock,Jennifer S. Kim,Susie Heo,Heloisa Alves,Siobhan M. White,Thomas R. Wójcicki,Emily L. Mailey,Victoria J. Vieira,Stephen A. Martin,Brandt D. Pence,Jeffrey A. Woods,Edward McAuley,Arthur F. Kramer +17 more
TL;DR: It is shown that aerobic exercise training increases the size of the anterior hippocampus, leading to improvements in spatial memory, and that increased hippocampal volume is associated with greater serum levels of BDNF, a mediator of neurogenesis in the dentate gyrus.
Journal Article
Position statement. Part one: Immune function and exercise.
Neil P. Walsh,Michael Gleeson,Roy J. Shephard,Jeffrey A. Woods,Nicolette C. Bishop,Monika Fleshner,Charlotte J. Green,Bente Klarlund Pedersen,Laurie Hoffman-Goetz,Connie J. Rogers,Hinnak Northoff,Asghar Abbasi,Perikles Simon +12 more
TL;DR: The epidemiological distinction between the generic term "physical activity" and the specific category of "exercise", which implies activity for a specific purpose such as improvement of physical condition or competition is recognised.
Journal ArticleDOI
Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor Is Associated with Age-Related Decline in Hippocampal Volume
Kirk I. Erickson,Ruchika Shaurya Prakash,Michelle W. Voss,Laura Chaddock,Susie Heo,Molly E. McLaren,Brandt D. Pence,Stephen A. Martin,Victoria J. Vieira,Jeffrey A. Woods,Edward McAuley,Arthur F. Kramer +11 more
TL;DR: Serum BDNF is identified as a significant factor related to hippocampal shrinkage and memory decline in late adulthood and is associated with smaller hippocampi and poorer memory.
Journal ArticleDOI
Exercise Alters Gut Microbiota Composition and Function in Lean and Obese Humans.
Jacob M. Allen,Lucy J. Mailing,Grace M. Niemiro,Rachel Moore,Marc D. Cook,Bryan A. White,Hannah D. Holscher,Jeffrey A. Woods +7 more
TL;DR: It is suggested that exercise training induces compositional and functional changes in the human gut microbiota that are dependent on obesity status, independent of diet and contingent on the sustainment of exercise.
Journal ArticleDOI
Exergaming and older adult cognition: a cluster randomized clinical trial.
Cay Anderson-Hanley,Cay Anderson-Hanley,Paul J. Arciero,Paul J. Arciero,Adam M. Brickman,Joseph P Nimon,Naoko Okuma,Sarah C. Westen,Molly E. Merz,Brandt D. Pence,Jeffrey A. Woods,Arthur F. Kramer,Earl A. Zimmerman +12 more
TL;DR: Cybercycling older adults achieved better cognitive function than traditional exercisers, for the same effort, suggesting that simultaneous cognitive and physical exercise has greater potential for preventing cognitive decline.
