There is a special reason for reviewing this book at this time: it is the 50th edition of a compendium that is known and used frequently in most chemical and physical laboratories in many parts of the world. Surely, a publication that has been published for 56 years, withstanding the vagaries of science in this century, must have had something to offer. There is another reason: while the book is a standard fixture in most chemical and physical laboratories, including those in medical centers, it is not as frequently seen in the laboratories of physician's offices (those either in solo or group practice). I believe that the Handbook can be useful in those laboratories. One of the reasons, among others, is that the various basic items of information it offers may be helpful in new tests, either physical or chemical, which are continuously being published. The long-standing popularity of thermoelectric materials has contributed to the creation of various thermoelectric devices and stimulated the development of strategies to improve their thermoelectric performance. In this review, we aim to comprehensively summarize the state-of-the-art strategies for the realization of high-performance thermoelectric materials and devices by establishing the links between synthesis, structural characteristics, properties, underlying chemistry and physics, including structural design (point defects, dislocations, interfaces, inclusions, and pores), multidimensional design (quantum dots/wires, nanoparticles, nanowires, nano- or microbelts, few-layered nanosheets, nano- or microplates, thin films, single crystals, and polycrystalline bulks), and advanced device design (thermoelectric modules, miniature generators and coolers, and flexible thermoelectric generators). The outline of each strategy starts with a concise presentation of their fundamentals and carefully selected examples. In the end, we point out the controversies, challenges, and outlooks toward the future development of thermoelectric materials and devices. Overall, this review will serve to help materials scientists, chemists, and physicists, particularly students and young researchers, in selecting suitable strategies for the improvement of thermoelectrics and potentially other relevant energy conversion technologies.

Biodegradable materials, including natural and synthetic polymers and hydrolyzable metals, constitute the main components of temporary, implantable medical devices. Besides the intrinsic properties of the materials, the most critical factor determining the successful clinical outcome of implantable and degradable devices is the host response, particularly the immune response, which largely depends on the material features and degradation mechanisms. In this Review, we first survey the state of the art in terms of materials options for use in biodegradable medical devices, focusing on degradation mechanisms and their control. In particular, we highlight silk, which is emerging as an important polymer, owing to its mechanical robustness, bioactive component sequestration, degradability without problematic metabolic products and biocompatibility. We then discuss the host response to these biodegradable materials in terms of dynamic tissue–implant interfaces. Next, we examine the clinical translation of three leading biodegradable material systems — natural and synthetic biodegradable polymers and biodegradable metals — and the related challenges in the context of orthopaedic fixation devices, cardiovascular stents and biodegradable electronic devices. Looking to the future, we propose updated material design strategies to improve the clinical outcomes for these biodegradable medical devices. Clinical outcomes with implantable and degradable devices largely depend on host response. This Review surveys material options and degradation mechanisms relevant to host responses to biodegradable devices, examines clinical translation of leading biodegradable materials and proposes updated material-design strategies to improve device performance.

The influence of alloying and fabrication techniques on the mechanical properties, biodegradability and biocompatibility of zinc: A comprehensive review.

The martensitic advanced high-strength steels (MS-AHSS) are used to create fuel-efficient, crashworthy cars. Hydrogen embrittlement (HE) is an issue with high-strength steels; thus, the interaction of hydrogen with MS-AHSS needs to be studied. There are only a few published works on the HE of MS-AHSS. The current literature indicates that the HE susceptibility of MS-AHSS is affected by (i) the strength of the steel, (ii) the applied strain rate, (iii) the concentration of hydrogen, (iv) microstructure, (v) tempering, (vi) residual stress, (vii) fabrication route, (viii) inclusions, (ix) metallic coatings, and (x) specific precipitates. Some of the unresolved issues include (i) the correlation of laboratory results to service performance, (ii) establishing the conditions or factors that lead to a certain HE response, (iii) studying the effect of stress rate on HE, and (iv) a comprehensive understanding of hydrogen trapping in MS-AHSS.
