We discuss in this review how the roughness of a solid impacts its wettability. We see in particular that both the apparent contact angle and the contact angle hysteresis can be dramatically affected by the presence of roughness. Owing to the development of refined methods for setting very well-controlled micro- or nanotextures on a solid, these effects are being exploited to induce novel wetting properties, such as spontaneous filmification, superhydrophobicity, superoleophobicity, and interfacial slip, that could not be achieved without roughness.

Wetting and Roughness

A superhydrophobic surface is a surface with a water contact angle close to or higher than 150°. In this feature article, we review the historical and present research on superhydrophobic surfaces, including the characterization of superhydrophobicity, different ways to fabricate rough surfaces, and low-surface-energy modifications on inorganic and organic rough surfaces. It is the combination of surface roughness and low-surface-energy modification that leads to superhydrophobicity. Notably, research on superhydrophobic surfaces has not only fundamental interest but various possible functional applications in micro- and nano-materials and devices.

Bioinspired Surfaces with Superwettability: New Insight on Theory, Design, and Applications

While the behaviour of large amounts of liquid is dictated by gravity, surface forces become dominant at small scales. They have for example the remarkable ability to make droplets stick to their substrates (even if they are inclined), which is a practical issue in many cases (windshields, window panes, greenhouses, or microfluidic devices). Here we describe how this problem can be overcome with super-hydrophobic materials. These materials are often developed thanks to micro-textures, which decorate a solid surface, and we describe the way such textures modify the wettability of that solid. We conclude by showing the unusual dynamics of drops in a super-hydrophobic situation.

Non-sticking drops

Nanofluidics has emerged recently in the footsteps of microfluidics, following the quest for scale reduction inherent to nanotechnologies. By definition, nanofluidics explores transport phenomena of fluids at nanometer scales. Why is the nanometer scale specific? What fluid properties are probed at nanometric scales? In other words, why does ‘nanofluidics’ deserve its own brand name? In this critical review, we will explore the vast manifold of length scales emerging for fluid behavior at the nanoscale, as well as the associated mechanisms and corresponding applications. We will in particular explore the interplay between bulk and interface phenomena. The limit of validity of the continuum approaches will be discussed, as well as the numerous surface induced effects occurring at these scales, from hydrodynamic slippage to the various electro-kinetic phenomena originating from the couplings between hydrodynamics and electrostatics. An enlightening analogy between ion transport in nanochannels and transport in doped semi-conductors will be discussed (156 references).

Nanofluidics, from bulk to interfaces

A series of experiments is presented which demonstrate significant drag reduction for the laminar flow of water through microchannels using hydrophobic surfaces with well-defined micron-sized surface roughness. These ultrahydrophobic surfaces are fabricated from silicon wafers using photolithography and are designed to incorporate precise patterns of microposts and microridges which are made hydrophobic through a chemical reaction with an organosilane. An experimental flow cell is used to measure the pressure drop as a function of the flow rate for a series of microchannel geometries and ultrahydrophobic surface designs. Pressure drop reductions up to 40% and apparent slip lengths larger than 20 μm are obtained using ultrahydrophobic surfaces. No drag reduction is observed for smooth hydrophobic surfaces. Laminar drag reduction in microchannels using ultrahydrophobic surfaces

A series of experiments are presented which study the flow kinematics of water past drag-reducing superhydrophobic surfaces. The ultrahydrophobic surfaces are fabricated from silicon wafers using photolithography and are designed to incorporate precise patterns of micrometer-sized ridges aligned in the flow direction. The ridges are made hydrophobic through a chemical reaction with an organosilane. An experimental flow cell is used to measure the velocity profile and the pressure drop as a function of the flow rate for a series of rectangular cross-section microchannel geometries and ultrahydrophobic surface designs. The velocity profile across the microchannel is determined through microparticle image velocimetry (μ-PIV) measurements capable of resolving the flow down to lengthscales well below the size of the surface features. Direct velocity measurements of the flow past drag-reducing ultrahydrophobic surfaces

Under laminar, microscale flow conditions, rapid mixing can be difficult to achieve. In these low Reynolds number flows, mixing rates are governed by molecular diffusion, and in the absence of enhanced mixing techniques, mixing lengths and residence times can be much longer than most applications will allow. A number of active mixing techniques have been developed to improve mixing; however, they can be complex to implement and expensive to fabricate. In this paper, we describe a passive mixing method that utilizes a series of ultrahydrophobic surfaces. Our previous experiments have demonstrated that a shear-free air-water interface supported between hydrophobic microridges results in large slip velocities along these ultrahydrophobic surfaces, and significant drag reduction. By aligning the microridges and therefore the air-water interface at an oblique angle to the flow direction, a secondary flow is generated, which is shown to efficiently stretch and fold the fluid elements and reduce the mixing length by more than an order of magnitude compared to that of a smooth microchannel. The designs of the ultrahydrophobic surfaces were optimized through experiments and numerical simulations. A Y-shaped channel was used to bring two streams of water together, one tagged with a fluorescent dye. A confocal microscope was used to measure fluorescence intensity and dye concentration. Quantitative agreement between the experiments and the numerical simulations was achieved for both the flow patterns and degree of mixing. Increasing the angle of the microridges was found to reduce the mixing length up to a critical angle of about 60°, beyond which the mixing length was found to increase with further increases to the angle of the microridge. The mixing enhancement was found to be much less sensitive to changes in microridge width or separation.
