So far in this course we have dealt entirely with the evolution of characters that are controlled by simple Mendelian inheritance at a single locus. There are notes on the course website about gametic disequilibrium and how allele frequencies change at two loci simultaneously, but we didn’t discuss them. In every example we’ve considered we’ve imagined that we could understand something about evolution by examining the evolution of a single gene. That’s the domain of classical population genetics. For the next few weeks we’re going to be exploring a field that’s actually older than classical population genetics, although the approach we’ll be taking to it involves the use of population genetic machinery. If you know a little about the history of evolutionary biology, you may know that after the rediscovery of Mendel’s work in 1900 there was a heated debate between the “biometricians” (e.g., Galton and Pearson) and the “Mendelians” (e.g., de Vries, Correns, Bateson, and Morgan). We present the science and technology roadmap for graphene, related two-dimensional crystals, and hybrid systems, targeting an evolution in technology, that might lead to impacts and benefits reaching into most areas of society. This roadmap was developed within the framework of the European Graphene Flagship and outlines the main targets and research areas as best understood at the start of this ambitious project. We provide an overview of the key aspects of graphene and related materials (GRMs), ranging from fundamental research challenges to a variety of applications in a large number of sectors, highlighting the steps necessary to take GRMs from a state of raw potential to a point where they might revolutionize multiple industries. We also define an extensive list of acronyms in an effort to standardize the nomenclature in this emerging field.

Affirming Diversity: The Sociopolitical Context of Multicultural Education

The number of patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) caused by hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection remains large, despite the remarkable effectiveness of antiviral drugs and vaccines for HBV in preventing and treating HBV infection. Necroptosis is closely related to the occurrence of inflammation, clearance of viral infection, and tumor progression. Presently, little is known about the changes in necroptosis-related genes in the progression from chronic HBV infection (CHI) to HBV-related hepatic fibrosis (HBV-HF) and HBV-related hepatocellular carcinoma (HBV-HCC). In this study, Cox regression analysis was performed using GSE14520 chip data and a necroptosis-related genes survival prognosis score (NRGPS) was established for HBV-HCC patients. NRGPS was constructed using three model genes (G6PD, PINK1 and LGALS3), and verified by data sequencing in the TCGA database. The HBV-HCC cell model was established by transfection of pAAV/HBV1.2C2, constructed by homologous recombination, into HUH7 and HEPG2 cells. The expression levels of G6PD, PINK1, and LGALS3 were detected using RT-qPCR. We further analyzed the expression of the model genes in GSE83148, GSE84044, and GSE14520 and found that LGALS3 was consistently highly expressed in CHI, high fibrosis score and high NRGPS. In addition, immune microenvironment analysis showed that LGALS3 was not only associated with the infiltration of regulatory T cells in the immune microenvironment but also with expression of CCL20 and CCR6. The expression levels of model genes, FOXP3 and CCR6, were analyzed using RT-qPCR in peripheral blood mononuclear cells of 31 hepatitis B surface antibody positive patients, 30 CHI, 21 HBV-HF, and 20 HBV-HCC. In further cell-model experiments, we analyzed the expression of CCL20 by RT-qPCR and the changes in cell proliferation and migration by CCK8 and transwell assays, respectively, in HBV-HCC cell models after LGALS3 knockdown. The findings of this study suggest that LGALS3 could be a biomarker for adverse progression following chronic HBV infection and may also be involved in the regulation of the immune microenvironment, making it a potential therapeutic target.

In the investigation of the sensing performance based on localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR), the bulk
sensitivity, which is the spectral shift per refractive index unit upon the change of the surrounding index to spatial
infinite, is often measured and considered as the indication of the sensing ability. To the contrary, in biosensing
applications only the refractive index in a confined region close to the metal nanostructure surface is altered due to the
attachment of the recognition and target molecules. The correlation between the bulk and surface sensitivity is
nevertheless ambiguous, especially in strongly coupled plasmonic systems, and rarely discussed in the literature. In this
paper, we examine the bulk and surface sensing performance of periodic Au nanodisk arrays on quartz substrates. By
means of diffractive coupling of LSPR in the periodic arrays, the bulk sensitivity and the figure of merit (FoM, as high as
~30) could be varied by engineering the coupling strength and adjusting the size of the Au nanodisk and the array pitch.
The surface sensing performance is also explored by sequential atomic layer deposition of Al2O3, and the electric field
decay from the Au nanodisk surface could thus be extracted using an exponential function. It is demonstrated that in
these substrates the surface and bulk sensitivity have an opposite dependence on the coupling strength. In spite of the
high bulk sensitivity and FoM in systems with strong coupling, a low surface sensitivity is demonstrated due to the large
electric field decay length. Therefore, detailed and careful design of the coupling strength and the surface electric field to
match the size of the target biomolecule is very critical for the best sensing performance. Moreover, we provide a more
reliable biosensor design protocol based on the surface sensing performance.

Investigation of the correlation between the bulk and surface sensing performance in plasmonic crystals

The invention discloses an application of histone methylation H3K4me3 in the mouse ovarian development. The effect of H3K4me3 on the mouse ovarian follicle development is studied from the living bodylevel and protein level, and the result confirms that the H3K4me3 degree increase can promote the mouse ovarian follicle development, inhibit the mouse follicle apoptosis, and increase the litter sizeand litter weight of mice; and the H3K4me3 degree lowering before sexual maturity in mice can inhibit the secretion of GnRH and gonadotropin-releasing hormone LH and FSH in the blood of the mice. A foundation for further exploring the mechanism of H3K4me3 targeting and regulating key genes of the mouse ovarian follicle development at the molecular level, and then regulating the mechanism of the ovarian follicle development is laid.
