Journal ArticleDOI
Varicella-Zoster Virus–Specific Immune Responses in Elderly Recipients of a Herpes Zoster Vaccine
Myron J. Levin,Michael N. Oxman,Jane H. Zhang,Gary R. Johnson,Harold A. Stanley,A. R Hayward,Michael J. Caulfield,Michael R. Irwin,Jeffrey G. Smith,Jim Clair,Ivan S. F. Chan,Heather M. Williams,Ruth Harbecke,Rocio D. Marchese,Sharon E. Straus,Anne A. Gershon,Adriana Weinberg +16 more
TL;DR: The hypothesis that boosting VZV-CMI protects older adults against herpes zoster and postherpetic neuralgia is supported, as it paralleled the clinical effects of the vaccine observed during the efficacy trial.
Journal ArticleDOI
Varicella Zoster Virus–Specific Immune Responses to a Herpes Zoster Vaccine in Elderly Recipients With Major Depression and the Impact of Antidepressant Medications
Michael R. Irwin,Myron J. Levin,Mark L. Laudenslager,Richard G. Olmstead,Anne Lucko,Nancy Lang,Carmen Carrillo,Harold A. Stanley,Michael J. Caulfield,Adriana Weinberg,Ivan S. F. Chan,Jim Clair,Jeffrey G. Smith,Rocio D. Marchese,Heather M. Williams,Danielle J. Beck,Patricia T. McCook,Jane H. Zhang,Gary R. Johnson,Michael N. Oxman,Michael N. Oxman +20 more
TL;DR: Depressed patients have diminished VZV-CMI responses to zoster vaccine, and treatment with antidepressant medication is associated with normalization of these responses, and untreated depression may increase the risk and severity of HZ and reduce the efficacy of zoster vaccines.
Journal ArticleDOI
Major Depressive Disorder and Immunity to Varicella-Zoster Virus in the Elderly
Michael R. Irwin,Myron J. Levin,Carmen Carrillo,Richard G. Olmstead,Anne Lucko,Nancy Lang,Michael J. Caulfield,Adriana Weinberg,Ivan S. F. Chan,Jim Clair,Jeffrey G. Smith,Rocio D. Marchese,Heather M. Williams,Danielle J. Beck,Patricia T. McCook,Gary R. Johnson,Michael N. Oxman,Michael N. Oxman +17 more
TL;DR: Since lower levels of VZV-RCF appear to explain the increased risk and severity of herpes zoster observed in older adults, these findings suggest that, in addition to increasing age, depression may increase the risk and seriousness of herpesZoster.
