Journal ArticleDOI
Transitions between States of Disability and Independence among Older Persons
TL;DR: Describing disability states experienced by older persons was described, to evaluate the rate of transitions between states and the duration of disability episodes, and to determine whether these findings differ on the basis of physical frailty--a condition of low physical capacity and vulnerability to adverse functional outcomes.
Journal ArticleDOI
The Development of Fear of Falling Among Community-Living Older Women: Predisposing Factors and Subsequent Fall Events
TL;DR: Fear of falling develops due to a combination of predisposing factors and subsequent fall events among community-living older women, and preventive efforts to reduce fear of falling may also decrease the likelihood of falling.
Journal ArticleDOI
Relationships among inflammation nutrition and physiologic mechanisms establishing albumin levels in hemodialysis patients
George A. Kaysen,Joel A. Dubin,Hans-Georg Müller,William E. Mitch,Laura Rosales,Nathan W. Levin +5 more
TL;DR: Within the range of albumin levels in hemodialysis patients, nutritional variables primarily affected albumin synthesis while inflammation caused hypoalbuminemia by increasing albumin FCR.
Journal ArticleDOI
The COMPASS study: a longitudinal hierarchical research platform for evaluating natural experiments related to changes in school-level programs, policies and built environment resources
Scott T. Leatherdale,K. Stephen Brown,Valerie Carson,Ruth A. Childs,Joel A. Dubin,Susan J. Elliott,Guy Faulkner,David Hammond,Steve Manske,Catherine M. Sabiston,Rachel E. Laxer,Chad Bredin,Audra Thompson-Haile +12 more
TL;DR: COMPASS is the first study with the infrastructure to robustly evaluate the impact that changes in multiple school-level programs, policies, and BE characteristics within or surrounding a school might have on multiple youth health behaviours or outcomes over time.
Journal ArticleDOI
The acute-phase response varies with time and predicts serum albumin levels in hemodialysis patients
George A. Kaysen,Joel A. Dubin,Joel A. Dubin,Joel A. Dubin,Hans G. Müller,Hans G. Müller,Hans G. Müller,Laura Rosales,Laura Rosales,Laura Rosales,Nathan W. Levin,Nathan W. Levin,Nathan W. Levin +12 more
TL;DR: Levels of APPs are the most powerful predictors for the levels of albumin concentration in hemodialysis in a longitudinal setting and age and the presence of an arteriovenous graft were significant predictors that were associated with reduced albumin.
