Improvements in nitrogen use efficiency in crop production are critical for addressing the triple challenges of food security, environmental degradation and climate change. Such improvements are conditional not only on technological innovation, but also on socio-economic factors that are at present poorly understood. Here we examine historical patterns of agricultural nitrogen-use efficiency and find a broad range of national approaches to agricultural development and related pollution. We analyse examples of nitrogen use and propose targets, by geographic region and crop type, to meet the 2050 global food demand projected by the Food and Agriculture Organization while also meeting the Sustainable Development Goals pertaining to agriculture recently adopted by the United Nations General Assembly. Furthermore, we discuss socio-economic policies and technological innovations that may help achieve them.

Managing nitrogen for sustainable development

Nitrogen (N) is central to living systems, and its addition to agricultural cropping systems is an essential facet of modern crop management and one of the major reasons that crop production has kept pace with human population growth. The benefits of N added to cropping systems come, however, at well-documented environmental costs: Increased coastal hypoxia, atmospheric nitrous oxide (N2O), reactive N gases in the troposphere, and N deposition onto forests and other natural areas are some of the consequences of our inability to keep fertilizer N from leaving cropped ecosystems via unmanaged pathways. The N cycle is complex, and solutions require a thorough understanding of both the biogeochemical pathways of N in agricultural systems and the consequences of different management practices. Despite the complexity of this challenge, however, a number of technologies are available today to reduce N loss. These include adding rotational complexity to cropping systems to improve N capture by crops, providing farmers with decision support tools for better predicting crop fertilizer N requirements, improving methods for optimizing fertilizer timing and placement, and developing watershed-level strategies to recapture N lost from fields. Solutions to the problem of agricultural N loss will require a portfolio approach in which different technologies are used in different combinations to address site-specific challenges. Solutions will also require incentives that promote their adoption.

Nitrogen in Agriculture: Balancing the Cost of an Essential Resource

Soil organic matter is a large global carbon pool. Isotopic labelling of litter in the lab and the field reveals that soil organic matter forms from labile organic compounds and litter fragments early and late in decomposition, respectively. Soil organic matter is the largest terrestrial carbon pool1. The pool size depends on the balance between formation of soil organic matter from decomposition of plant litter and its mineralization to inorganic carbon. Knowledge of soil organic matter formation remains limited2 and current C numerical models assume that stable soil organic matter is formed primarily from recalcitrant plant litter3. However, labile components of plant litter could also form mineral-stabilized soil organic matter4. Here we followed the decomposition of isotopically labelled above-ground litter and its incorporation into soil organic matter over three years in a grassland in Kansas, USA, and used laboratory incubations to determine the decay rates and pool structure of litter-derived organic matter. Early in decomposition, soil organic matter formed when non-structural compounds were lost from litter. Soil organic matter also formed at the end of decomposition, when both non-structural and structural compounds were lost at similar rates. We conclude that two pathways yield soil organic matter efficiently. A dissolved organic matter–microbial path occurs early in decomposition when litter loses mostly non-structural compounds, which are incorporated into microbial biomass at high rates, resulting in efficient soil organic matter formation. An equally efficient physical-transfer path occurs when litter fragments move into soil.

Formation of soil organic matter via biochemical and physical pathways of litter mass loss

Anaerobic digestion (AD) for biogas production leads to several changes in the composition of the resulting digestates compared to the original feedstock (ammonia content, pH, carbon to nitrogen ratio, etc.), which are relevant for the plant availability of macro- and micronutrients after field application. Increased NH4+-N content in digested slurries compared to undigested slurries does not guarantee improved uptake efficiency of slurry nitrogen and increased savings in fertilizer nitrogen. AD of crop residues and cover crops leads to an increase in the total amounts of mobile organic manures within the farming system, resulting in a higher nitrogen use efficiency and an increased scope for target-oriented nitrogen application in time and space, when needed by the crop, as an alternative to the site-bound soil incorporation as green manures. AD of dairy manure appears to reduce the fraction of immediate plant available phosphorus and micronutrients. This does, however, not affect short-term crop availability under field conditions. More studies are needed to improve current knowledge on sulfur losses during AD and fertilizer value of digestates.

Effects of anaerobic digestion on digestate nutrient availability and crop growth: A review

Labile, ‘high-quality’, plant litters are hypothesized to promote soil organic matter (SOM) stabilization in mineral soil fractions that are physicochemically protected from rapid mineralization. However, the effect of litter quality on SOM stabilization is inconsistent. High-quality litters, characterized by high N concentrations, low C/N ratios, and low phenol/lignin concentrations, are not consistently stabilized in SOM with greater efficiency than ‘low-quality’ litters characterized by low N concentrations, high C/N ratios, and high phenol/lignin concentrations. Here, we attempt to resolve these inconsistent results by developing a new conceptual model that links litter quality to the soil C saturation concept. Our model builds on the Microbial Efficiency-Matrix Stabilization framework (Cotrufo et al., 2013) by suggesting the effect of litter quality on SOM stabilization is modulated by the extent of soil C saturation such that high-quality litters are not always stabilized in SOM with greater efficiency than low-quality litters.

1 The goal of an N recommendation system is to accurately estimate the gap between the N provided by the soil and the N required by the plant. Accurately estimating this gap depends on the ability of the recommendation system to accurately estimate fi eld or subfi eld specifi c economically optimal nitrogen rates (EONR). Current recommendation systems are not as accurate as needed to provide consistently reliable estimates of N needs across years at the fi eld or subfi eld scale. Uncontrollable factors like temperature, rainfall timing, intensity and amount, and interactions of temperature and rainfall with factors such as N source, timing and placement, plant genetics, and soil characteristics combine to make N rate recommendations for an individual fi eld or rates for subfi elds a process guided as much by science as by the best professional judgement of farmers and farm advisors. In variable rate application technology (VRT), crop production input rate is changed within fields in response to spatially variable factors that affect the optimum application rate. It is being considered by farmers and the crop input industry because factors that affect crop yield are not always uniform within fields and, therefore, do not allow optimum efficiency or profitability from uniform application.
