Journal ArticleDOI
Water quality indicators and the risk of illness at beaches with nonpoint sources of fecal contamination.
John M. Colford,Timothy J. Wade,Kenneth Schiff,Catherine C. Wright,John F. Griffith,Sukhminder K. Sandhu,Susan Burns,Mark D. Sobsey,Greg L. Lovelace,Stephen B. Weisberg +9 more
TL;DR: Traditional fecal indicators currently used to monitor these beaches were not associated with health risks, and a need for alternative indicators of water quality where nonpoint sources are dominant fecal contributors is suggested.
Journal ArticleDOI
Performance of forty-one microbial source tracking methods: a twenty-seven lab evaluation study.
Alexandria B. Boehm,Laurie C. Van De Werfhorst,John F. Griffith,Patricia A. Holden,Jenny Jay,Orin C. Shanks,Dan Wang,Stephen B. Weisberg +7 more
TL;DR: The most sensitive and specific MST methodologies, based on an analysis of presence/absence of each marker in target and non-target fecal samples, were HF183 endpoint and HF183SYBR (human), CF193 and Rum2Bac (ruminant), CowM2 and CowM3 (cow), BacCan (dog), Gull2SYBR and LeeSeaGull (gull), and Pig2B Bac (pig).
Journal ArticleDOI
Persistent and fatal central-nervous-system ECHOvirus infections in patients with agammaglobulinemia.

Rosen +30 more
TL;DR: It is suggested that intact B-cell function is essential for eradication of ECHOvirus infection of the central nervous system.
Journal ArticleDOI
Genomics in marine monitoring: new opportunities for assessing marine health status
Sarah J. Bourlat,Ángel Borja,Jack A. Gilbert,Martin I. Taylor,Neil M Davies,Neil M Davies,Stephen B. Weisberg,John F. Griffith,Teresa Lettieri,Dawn Field,John A. H. Benzie,John A. H. Benzie,Frank Oliver Glöckner,Naiara Rodríguez-Ezpeleta,Daniel P. Faith,Tim P. Bean,Matthias Obst +16 more
TL;DR: The potential of genomics technology to provide accurate, rapid, and cost efficient observations of the marine environment is explored and guidelines and recommendations are suggested for how such methods can enter marine monitoring programs in a standardized manner.
Journal ArticleDOI
Evaluation of microbial source tracking methods using mixed fecal sources in aqueous test samples.
TL;DR: No MST method that was tested predicted the source material in the blind samples perfectly, and library-based isolate methods correctly identified the dominant source in most samples, but also had frequent false positives in which fecal sources not in the samples were incorrectly identified as being present.
