Global frequency and distribution of lightning as observed from space by the Optical Transient Detector

TL;DR: In this article, the authors used the OTD measurements to construct lightning climatology maps that demonstrate the geographical and seasonal distribution of lightning activity for the globe, and found that lightning occurs mainly over land areas, with an average land/ocean ratio of 10:1.

The Lightning Imaging Sensor

TL;DR: The Lightning Imaging Sensor (LIS) is a NASA Earth Observing System (EOS) instrument on the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) platform designed to acquire and investigate the distribution and variability of total lightning (i.e., cloud-to-ground and intracloud) between q35' in latitude.
Journal ArticleDOI

The North Alabama Lightning Mapping Array: Recent Severe Storm Observations and Future Prospects

TL;DR: The North Alabama Lightning Mapping Array (LMA) as mentioned in this paper is a test bed for the NEXRAD WSR-88D Doppler radar and has been used to measure the total lightning activity of a large number of severe weather events, including three supercell tornado outbreaks, two supercell hailstorm events and numerous microburst-producing storms and ordinary non-severe thunderstorms.
