Biomineralization is a naturally occurring process in living organisms. In this review, we discuss microbially induced calcium carbonate precipitation (MICP) in detail. In the MICP process, urease plays a major role in urea hydrolysis by a wide variety of microorganisms capable of producing high levels of urease. We also elaborate on the different polymorphs and the role of calcium in the formation of calcite crystal structures using various calcium sources. Additionally, the environmental factors affecting the production of urease and carbonate precipitation are discussed. This MICP is a promising, eco-friendly alternative approach to conventional and current remediation technologies to solve environmental problems in multidisciplinary fields. Multiple applications of MICP such as removal of heavy metals and radionuclides, improve the quality of construction materials and sequestration of atmospheric CO2 are discussed. In addition, we discuss other applications such as removal of calcium ions, PCBs and use of filler in rubber and plastics and fluorescent particles in stationary ink and stationary markers. MICP technology has become an efficient aspect of multidisciplinary fields. This report not only highlights the major strengths of MICP, but also discusses the limitations to application of this technology on a commercial scale.

Formations of calcium carbonate minerals by bacteria and its multiple applications.

The overall objective of the maintenance process is to increase the profitability of the operation and optimize the total life cycle cost without compromising safety or environmental issues. Risk assessment integrates reliability with safety and environmental issues and therefore can be used as a decision tool for preventive maintenance planning. Maintenance planning based on risk analysis minimizes the probability of system failure and its consequences (related to safety, economic, and environment). It helps management in making correct decisions concerning investment in maintenance or related field. This will, in turn, result in better asset and capital utilization. This paper presents a new methodology for risk-based maintenance. The proposed methodology is comprehensive and quantitative. It comprises three main modules: risk estimation module, risk evaluation module, and maintenance planning module. Details of the three modules are given. A case study, which exemplifies the use of methodology to a heating, ventilation and air-conditioning (HVAC) system, is also discussed.

Background Cold plasma (CP) is an emerging technology, which has attracted the attention of scientists globally. It was originally developed for ameliorating the printing and adhesion properties of polymers plus a variety of usage domains in electronics. In the last decade, its applications were extended into the food industry as a powerful tool for non-thermal processing, with diverse forms for utilization. Scope and approach This review presents an overview of recent studies on the application of cold plasma in the food industry. Specific areas discussed include microbial decontamination of food products, packaging material processing, functionality modification of food materials and dissipation of agrochemical residues. The application of CP has also been expanded into areas, such as hydrogenation of edible oils, mitigation of food allergy, inactivation of anti-nutritional factors, tailoring of seed germination performance and effluent management. In addition, the paper provides a summary of plasma chemistry and sources, factors influencing plasma efficiency and strategies for augmentation. Furthermore, key areas for future research are highlighted and salient drawbacks are discussed. Key findings and conclusions The recent studies conducted on the interaction of reactive species with food contact surfaces establish plasma processing as an eco-friendly technique with minimal changes to food products, making it a befitting alternative to traditional techniques. Active researches focused on up-scaling for commercial applications are urgently required.

We examined the effectiveness of using different calcium salts for bioconsolidation. Four calcium salts were chosen based on their applicability and solubility. Initial experiments demonstrated that the addition of any calcium salt had a negative effect on the urease activity of S. pasteurii. Microscopic examinations elucidated the morphological and structural differences of the calcium carbonate (CaCO3) crystals induced. Calcite and vaterite are the prominent forms of CaCO3 detected according to X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis. Bioconsolidated sand samples were able to significantly resist water flow through a column compared to the non-treated samples. Also, in a tightness test, the differences in the ability to retain water within columns were observed among the samples tested. Moreover, despite the differences, the calcium salts tested still bound the sand together to form blocks. Our results further explain the influence of multiple factors in crystal formation and sand bioconsolidation effectiveness.
