Journal ArticleDOI

IL-1β is an innate immune sensor of microbial proteolysis

TL;DR: It is found that GAS protease SpeB directly activates IL-1β independent of host inflammasome proteins and this may account for more frequent GAS infections in rheumatoid arthritis patients receiving anakinra, which may represent an ancestral system of innate immune regulation.
Journal ArticleDOI

Group A Streptococcal M1 Protein Sequesters Cathelicidin to Evade Innate Immune Killing

TL;DR: Exogenous M1 protein rescues M1-deficient GAS from killing by neutrophils and within neutrophil extracellular traps and neutralizes LL-37 chemotactic properties, and cathelicidin resistance is essential for the pathogenesis of hyperinvasive M1T1 GAS.
