The digital mediation resources used in Distance Education can hinder the teacher's perception about the student's state of mind. However, the textual expression in natural language is widely encouraged in most Distance Education courses, through the use of Virtual Learning Environments and other digital tools. This fact has motivated research efforts in order to identify feelings expressed by students in textual messages. A significant part of the known approaches in this area apply textual analysis without a deep linguistic representation, which can lead to some weakness in the results obtained. This paper reports an approach using theories of Computational Lexical Semantics for the representation of the lexicon of emotion. The methodology was developed through studies regarding corpus analysis, lexical unit description, and the implementation of a computational system to identify the feelings expressed in the textual messages in natural language, using the lexicon of emotion. This system was used in evaluation experiments that indicate improvements when comparing the adopted approach with other similar approaches.

A Linguistic Approach to Identify the Affective Dimension Expressed in Textual Messages

A computação móvel está a permitir o acesso a informações a qualquer tempo, em qualquer lugar. Porém, mais do que aplicações pessoais com simples acesso a informações, pode -se utilizar a infra-estrutura de rede já existente para a execução de aplicações mais avançadas, como as aplicações móveis colaborativas. Mobilidade física e lógica introduz complexidade e restrições ao projeto de aplicações distribuídas, o que requer um suporte adequado do sistema. Com o intuito de abordar este tema está em desenvolvimento o projeto ISAM (Infra-estrutura de Suporte às Aplicações Móveis), que conta com a participação de várias instituições do sul do Brasil. Nest artigo, apresenta-se uma visão geral da arquitetura do sistema ISAM, introduz -se os requisitos básicos que a inspiraram e seus principais componentes. Focalizam -se, principalmente, as questões relativas à adaptação do ambiente às v ariações nas condições do contexto em que a aplicação está inserida. A idéia principal é explorar informações sobre o contexto (recursos, serviços, localização e perfil do usuário) que associadas a políticas, mecanismos e estratégias de adaptação tenta superar, de forma integrada, as bem conhecidas limitações do ambiente móvel.

Requisitos para o projeto de aplicações móveis distribuídas

This study proposes SW-Context, a model focused on defining context information for software, and storing this information in contextual history. The proposed model provides qualitative information concerning source code and design issues to support the daily activities of software developers, thereby improving their situation awareness. SW-Context was evaluated through a case study in industry, in which 12 developers used it to support maintenance activities throughout one month. After this period, all developers filled out a qualitative questionnaire, which was formulated based on the well-established technology acceptance model. The obtained results suggest that 67% of developers completely agree with the usefulness and ease of use of the SW-Context. These results are encouraging and show the potential for implementing SW-Context in broader software maintenance scenarios.

SW-Context: a model to improve developers’ situational awareness

Even though the use of recommender systems is already widely spread in several application areas, there is still a lack of studies for accessibility research field. One of these attempts to use recommender system benefits for accessibility needs is Vulcanus. The Vulcanus recommender system uses similarity analysis to compare user’s trails. In this way, it is possible to take advantage of the user’s past behavior and distribute personalized content and services. The Vulcanus combined concepts from ubiquitous computing, such as user profiles, context awareness, trails management, and similarity analysis. It uses two different approaches for trails similarity analysis: resources patterns and categories patterns. In this work we performed an asymptotic analysis, identifying Vulcanus’ algorithm complexity. Furthermore we also propose improvements achieved by dynamic programming technique, so the ordinary case is improved by using a bottom-up approach. With that approach, many unnecessary comparisons can be skipped and now Vulcanus 2.0 is presented with improvements in its average case scenario.
