The Mobile Computing is a vision of future that promises to modify the way people work and interact today. It has emerged as a new field, distinct from conventional distributed computing by its focus on mobility and its consequence. The physical and logical mobility allows the creation of applications with news requirements: built-in mobility, adaptability and flexibility. So, software production for this global mobility is complex. Challenges include designing applications which service levels and available resources are unpredictable, and the behavior is variable in time and space. To provide a system architecture that simplifies the task of implementing the mobile applications with adaptive behavior is the objective of the ongoing ISAM Project. In order to achieve its goal, ISAM uses as strategies: (a) integrated environment that provides a programming paradigm and its execution environment; (b) uniform treatment of adaptation through multilevel collaborative model, in which both the system and the application contribute for that. The scheduling process – the core of ISAM architecture, manages this collaboration. Introducing HoloLanguage abstractions that express adaptability makes the control of adaptation by part of application. So, adaptation is not fully transparent to applications. In this paper, we present the main decisions used for designing the ISAM Architecture. We also introduce a first taxonomy for mobile applications with adaptive behavior.

ISAM: a Software Architecture for Pervasive Computing

A Collaborative Model for Ubiquitous Learning Environments.

A simple, rapid, low-cost method was proposed for the imaging of Pseudomonas aeruginosa biofilms on metallic surfaces using an infrared camera. Stainless steel coupons were cooled to generate a thermal gradient in relation to biofilm for active thermography (AT). Both cooling and image acquisition times were optimized and the images obtained with AT were compared with those from scanning electron microscopy. A free software (Thermofilm) was developed for image processing and the results were compared with the software ImageJ, with good agreement (from 87.7 to 103.8%). Images of coupons treated with sanitizer (peracetic acid) were obtained to show the applicability of the proposed method for biofilm studies. All analytical steps could be performed in 3 min in a noncontact, nondestructive, low-cost, portable, and easy-to-use way.

To increase the quality of life and independence of people with disabilities and enderly (PDE), there must be solutions that provide accessibility in urban environments. AccompCare is a model for tracking and assisting PDE in their displacement, using mobile and ubiquitous computing to provide accessibility services. Accompcare’s main contribution is the strategy of disponibilization of help. This strategy initially seeks collaborators who are close to the PDE and, not finding them, directs the request to a remote call center. The call center can guide the user through the resources of the mobile device. In addition, AccompCare contemplates an urban scenario, allowing the delimitation of several service areas. The model was implemented and evaluated by five wheelchair users through scenarios. The results showed a good acceptance by the users, considering their perceptions of usability and utility of the system.
