This critical review will be of interest to the experts in porous solids (including catalysis), but also solid state chemists and physicists. It presents the state-of-the-art on hybrid porous solids, their advantages, their new routes of synthesis, the structural concepts useful for their ‘design’, aiming at reaching very large pores. Their dynamic properties and the possibility of predicting their structure are described. The large tunability of the pore size leads to unprecedented properties and applications. They concern adsorption of species, storage and delivery and the physical properties of the dense phases. (323 references)

Tools and tactics for the optical detection of mercuric ion.

Common approximate exchange-correlation functionals suffer from self-interaction error, and as a result, their corresponding potentials have incorrect asymptotic behavior. The exact asymptote can be imposed by introducing range separation into the exchange component and replacing the long-range portion of the approximate exchange by the Hartree-Fock counterpart. The authors show that this long-range correction works particularly well in combination with the short-range variant of the Perdew-Burke-Ernzerhof (PBE) exchange functional. This long-range-corrected hybrid, here denoted LC-ωPBE, is remarkably accurate for a broad range of molecular properties, such as thermochemistry, barrier heights of chemical reactions, bond lengths, and most notably, description of processes involving long-range charge transfer.

Functional π-Gelators and Their Applications

Two new chemosensors that exhibit high affinity and high selectivity for Hg2+ in aqueous environment which operate through two different channels, optic/redox and optic/fluorescent, are reported. The optical change in sensing can be used even for a “naked-eye” detection of Hg2+ ions, whereas the fluorescent response can be modulated by varying the solvent polarity.

Metal chelation is considered a rational therapeutic approach for interdicting Alzheimer’s amyloid pathogenesis. At present, enhancing the targeting and efficacy of metal-ion chelating agents through ligand design is a main strategy in the development of the next generation of metal chelators. Inspired by the traditional dye Thioflavin-T, we have designed new multifunctional molecules that contain both amyloid binding and metal chelating properties. In silico techniques have enabled us to identify commercial compounds that enclose the designed molecular framework (M1), include potential antioxidant properties, facilitate the formation of iodine-labeled derivatives, and can be permeable through the blood−brain barrier.
