Translocation of Sickle Cell Erythrocyte MicroRNAs into Plasmodium falciparum Inhibits Parasite Translation and Contributes to Malaria Resistance
Gregory LaMonte,Nisha Philip,Joseph M. Reardon,Joshua R. Lacsina,William H. Majoros,Lesley Chapman,Courtney D. Thornburg,Marilyn J. Telen,Uwe Ohler,Christopher V. Nicchitta,Timothy A.J. Haystead,Jen-Tsan Chi +11 more
TL;DR: Sickle cell erythrocytes exhibit cell-intrinsic resistance to malaria in part through an atypical miRNA activity, which may represent a unique host defense strategy against complex eukaryotic pathogens.
Journal ArticleDOI
Acute myocardial infarction in sub-Saharan Africa: the need for data.
Julian T. Hertz,Joseph M. Reardon,Clarissa Garcia Rodrigues,Luciano de Andrade,Luciano de Andrade,Alexander T. Limkakeng,Gerald S. Bloomfield,Catherine Lynch +7 more
TL;DR: Well-designed registries and surveillance studies that capture the broad and diverse population with acute myocardial infarction in sub-Saharan Africa using common diagnostic criteria are critical in order to guide prevention and treatment strategies.
Journal ArticleDOI
Use of diagnosis codes for detection of clinically significant opioid poisoning in the emergency department: A retrospective analysis of a surveillance case definition.
TL;DR: Only naloxone use improved the positive predictive value of ICD-9-CM codes for identifying clinically significant opioid poisoning, but was associated with a high false negative rate.
Journal ArticleDOI
The epidemiology and hotspots of road traffic injuries in Moshi, Tanzania: An observational study
Joseph M. Reardon,Luciano de Andrade,Julian T. Hertz,George Kiwango,Anneth Teu,Msafiri Pesambili,Deena El-Gabri,Michael B. Hocker,Mark Mvungi,João Ricardo Nickenig Vissoci,João Ricardo Nickenig Vissoci,Catherine A. Staton +11 more
TL;DR: It is demonstrated that RTIs in Moshi occur in predictable high traffic locations and a greater emphasis on intersection safety is needed to reduce these preventable injuries.
Journal ArticleDOI
Cost-effectiveness of birth-dose hepatitis B vaccination among refugee populations in the African region: a series of case studies
Joseph M. Reardon,Siobhán O'Connor,Joseph D Njau,Eugene K. Lam,Catherine A. Staton,Susan T. Cookson +5 more
TL;DR: Addition of HepB BD vaccination is very cost-effective among three sub-Saharan refugee populations, using relative life-years saved, and shows the potential benefit of implementing Hep B BD vaccination among other camp-based refugee populations as more AFR countries introduce national hepatitis B BD policies.
