Characterization of sialic acid index of plasma apolipoprotein J and phosphatidylethanol during alcohol detoxification--a pilot study.
Friedrich M. Wurst,Natasha Thon,Wolfgang Weinmann,Scott Tippetts,Paul R. Marques,Judith A. Hahn,Christer Alling,Steina Aradottir,Susanne Hartmann,M. Raj Lakshman +9 more
TL;DR: The preliminary data suggest that SIJ and PEth might hold potential as markers of heavy ethanol intake, in comparison with traditional and emerging biomarkers.
Journal ArticleDOI

Gregory M. Marcus,Eric Vittinghoff,Isaac R. Whitman,Sean Joyce,Vivian Yang,Gregory Nah,Edward P. Gerstenfeld,Joshua D. Moss,Randall J. Lee,Byron K. Lee,Zian H. Tseng,Vasanth Vedantham,Jeffrey E. Olgin,Melvin M. Scheinman,Henry H. Hsia,Rachel A. Gladstone,Shannon M Fan,Emily Lee,Christina D. Fang,Kelsey Ogomori,Robin Fatch,Judith A. Hahn +21 more
TL;DR: In this paper, a prospective case-crossover analysis showed that acute alcohol consumption may trigger a discrete atrial fibrillation (AF) event, which is associated with 2-fold higher odds of 1 alcoholic drink (odds ratio [OR], 2.02 [95% CI, 1.38 to 3.17]) and greater than 3-fold increased odds of at least 2 drinks (OR, 3.58 [CI, 1., 6.63 to 7.89]) in the preceding 4 hours.
Journal ArticleDOI
Sex, Drugs, and Hepatitis C Virus
TL;DR: Even a low rate of sexual transmission can account for a large number of new cases of HCV, which explains why the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention does not recommend condom use for longterm serodiscordant heterosexual couples to prevent HCV transmission.
Journal ArticleDOI
Hepatitis A Seroprevalence and Risk Factors Among Homeless Adults in San Francisco: Should Homelessness Be Included in the Risk-Based Strategy for Vaccination?
TL;DR: Overall anti-HAV prevalence elevated in this San Francisco homeless population compared with the general U.S. population indicates an excess risk of HAV infection and the potential need to offer hepatitis A vaccination as part of homeless services.
Journal ArticleDOI
