Journal ArticleDOI

Mechanisms of spontaneous resolution of rat liver fibrosis. Hepatic stellate cell apoptosis and reduced hepatic expression of metalloproteinase inhibitors.

TL;DR: It is suggested that apoptosis of activated HSC may vitally contribute to resolution of fibrosis by acting as a mechanism for removing the cell population responsible for both producing fibrotic neomatrix and protecting this matrix from degradation via their production of TIMPs.
Journal ArticleDOI

Human and rat hepatic stellate cells produce stem cell factor: a possible mechanism for mast cell recruitment in liver fibrosis.

TL;DR: Hepatic stellate cells activated in vitro produce stem cell factor, which may play an important role in recruiting mast cells to liver during injury and fibrosis.
Journal ArticleDOI

Silencing tissue inhibitors of metalloproteinases (TIMPs) with short interfering RNA reveals a role for TIMP-1 in hepatic stellate cell proliferation.

TL;DR: Evidence is provided that TIMP-1 is mechanistically central to liver fibrosis and an important potential therapeutic target and the emerging data from in vivo studies of TIMP inhibition provide strong evidence.
