Journal ArticleDOI
Comparison of optical, needle probe and ultrasonic techniques for the measurement of articular cartilage thickness
TL;DR: It is concluded that optical and needle probe methods can be used interchangeably when determining shear modulus of articular cartilage with indentation tests, however, if high area-aspect ratios (indenter radius-to-cartilage thickness ratios) are used in the indentation measurements uncertainty in shearmodulus may be markedly increased due to possible errors in the measurement of cartilage thickness.
Journal ArticleDOI
Characterization of articular cartilage by combining microscopic analysis with a fibril-reinforced finite-element model.
Petro Julkunen,P. Kiviranta,W Wouter Wilson,Jukka S. Jurvelin,Rami K. Korhonen,Rami K. Korhonen +5 more
TL;DR: Today's quantitative microscopic methods in combination with the fibril-reinforced poroviscoelastic model are feasible methods to characterize the structure-function relationships of articular cartilage.
Journal ArticleDOI
Proteoglycan and collagen sensitive MRI evaluation of normal and degenerated articular cartilage.
Mikko J. Nissi,Juha Töyräs,Mikko S. Laasanen,Jarno Rieppo,Simo Saarakkala,Reijo Lappalainen,Jukka S. Jurvelin,Miika T. Nieminen +7 more
TL;DR: Results reveal that changes in the quantitative MRI parameters studied are indicative of structural and compositional alterations as well as the mechanical impairment of spontaneously degenerated articular cartilage.
Journal ArticleDOI
Softening of canine articular cartilage after immobilization of the knee joint.
TL;DR: Effects of immobilization with a splint for 11 weeks on the stiffness of the articular cartilage in the canine knee were investigated and influenced the quality and quantity of articular Cartilage.
Journal ArticleDOI
Spatial assessment of articular cartilage proteoglycans with Gd‐DTPA‐enhanced T1 imaging
Miika T. Nieminen,Jarno Rieppo,Johanna Silvennoinen,Juha Töyräs,Juhana M. Hakumäki,Mika M. Hyttinen,Heikki J. Helminen,Jukka S. Jurvelin +7 more
TL;DR: Experimental evidence highlights the sensitivity of Gd‐DTPA‐enhanced T1 imaging of articular cartilage to reflect spatial changes in cartilage PG concentration in normal and degenerated tissue.
