Journal ArticleDOI
Identification of host-specific colonization factors of Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium.
Eirwen Morgan,June Campbell,Sonya C. Rowe,Jennie Bispham,Mark P. Stevens,Alison J. Bowen,Paul A. Barrow,Duncan J. Maskell,Timothy S. Wallis +8 more
TL;DR: It is concluded that S. Typhimurium uses different strategies to colonize calves and chicks, which has major implications for vaccine design.
Journal ArticleDOI
Net replication of Salmonella enterica serovars Typhimurium and Choleraesuis in porcine intestinal mucosa and nodes is associated with their differential virulence.
TL;DR: The rapid induction of proinflammatory responses by strain 4/74 may explain why pigs confine serovar Typhimurium infection to the intestines, whereas slow replication of Serovar Choleraesuis may enable it to evade host innate immunity and thus disseminate by stealth.
Journal ArticleDOI
Intimin, tir, and shiga toxin 1 do not influence enteropathogenic responses to shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli in bovine ligated intestinal loops.
Mark P. Stevens,Olivier Marchès,June Campbell,Veronika Huter,Gad Frankel,Alan D. Phillips,Eric Oswald,Timothy S. Wallis +7 more
TL;DR: It is indicated that some STEC induce intestinal inflammatory responses in calves by a mechanism that is independent of A/E-lesion formation, intimin, or Shiga toxin 1, which may have implications for strategies to reduce STEC carriage in cattle.
